Principal's Message
P&C Day - Friday 24 May
P&C Day is held each year to celebrate the important work undertaken in our state schools by our Parents and Citizens Associations.
It seems fitting that during such a busy month, there is an official day of recognition, a recognition well deserved by lots of hard working mothers, fathers and carers at Cranbrook who put up their hand to help out if they are able. Throughout the year, our volunteers fill countless orders, sell never ending supplies of merchandise and carry out 101 different tasks to make sure activities go as planned. It pays dividends. There is nothing more rewarding than looking past happy children to see the smiles and laughter of the volunteers behind the scenes. But coming in a close second is the ability to help our school out financially so we can keep improving our children’s school experience.
It’s because of volunteers that we can help make our school a better place for students. Just take a look at our wonderful new undercover facility outside the hall! It's an amazing space that is going to keep everyone out of the sun and rain when moving to and from the hall, as well as giving our Year 6 students another safe area to use at lunch times.
The recognition of everyone’s efforts on P&C Day is well deserved. Special thanks must go to our P&C Executive Committee Members:
- President - Adrian Coventry
- Vice President - Louise McNamara
- Treasurer - Bob Parker
- Secretary - Jacinta Bancroft
- P & C Operations Manager - Bridget Bambrick
The P & C Meetings are conducted every third Wednesday of the month at 6.30pm in the Uniform Shop. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend. (The next meeting is Wednesday, 19 June)
Providing a Safe Environment for Learning
Our core business as a school is to ensure that students achieve their potential in every aspect of their development, and research clearly demonstrates that students need to feel SAFE to fully engage in learning that increases their abilities. In fact, at Cranbrook State School, being SAFE is already highlighted as a key value in our School Wide Positive Behaviour Scheme. In our school, as with all schools, we occasionally have to deal with behaviours that are not safe due to the MINORITY. The majority of our students are safe and because of this, contribute to the culture of learning in our school. However, there are the minority of students that are not SAFE and Cranbrook, like all other Education Queensland schools, does not tolerate this behaviour in any form as outlined in our school that are not SAFE, to be able to display responsible behaviours that contribute to the culture of learning at Cranbrook State School.
Positive Behaviour for Learning
Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) is an educational process that brings together the whole-school community to contribute to developing a positive, safe and supportive learning culture. The PBL framework assists schools to improve social, emotional, behavioural and academic outcomes for children and young people.
There are three specific aspects to PBL:
- universal focus – to create a preventative, positive learning environment for all students
- targeted interventions – to improve social/emotional skills for students who need additional support
- individualised intensive supports - for students who have experienced academic and behavioural difficulties over an extended period of time.
Together, this three step process is known as developing a continuum of support. PBL uses a tiered intervention framework which uses varied levels of support for students based on their needs. The tiered approach addresses these needs through:
- investing in prevention for all students
- identifying and providing targeted supports for individual students who need more support
- providing individualised and intensive interventions for students with significant support needs.
Cranbrook has a continuum of support across the tiers that promotes student wellbeing within a school culture strongly focused on learning.
Through this framework, student assessment and instruction are linked to inform data-based decision-making. All children and young people receive universal support and instruction. If students need more support, their instructional program becomes more intensive and individualised to target their specific learning needs.
We endeavour to include our familes and community in this process too. Each newsletter will include an outline on what we've been adapting, what we're going to next focus on and how you as parents and carers, can communicate and implement the same strategies at home.
Enjoy your weekend!

Uniform Reminder
Sorry Day at Cranbrook 2024
Today we stopped to acknowledge our Nation's apology to the Stolen Generation. It is important to understand that when using the word 'sorry' in the context of the Stolen Generations, the word represents the grief and loss experienced by the parents, families and communities of the children who were forcibly removed. When we meet to commemorate Sorry Day, we gather together to commemorate the Stolen Generations, their families and communities, celebrating their strength and survival. We do so by showing respect and remembrance. By acknowledging our shared past we can begin the journey together to strive toward achieving healing and reconciliation in the wider community in the future.
This morning, classes gathered together and placed a hand with their name and their wish for the future or message to our community. Sorry Day marks the beginning of 'Reconciliation Week' with the theme for 2024 being 'Now more than ever'.

Class Borrowing Days
For students in Prep / Year 1 / Year 2 / Year 3…..you must have a library bag to protect your books.
It is very important that books are returned every week.
Students are not allowed to borrow more books until any outstanding ones are returned.
Please return your child’s home reader and library books on the following days:
Book Review
With so many beautiful new books in our library, we thought it would be great to hear from some of our students, just what they thought about some of them!
Samantha in Prep A (with a little help from Mum, Esther) said about The Oak Tree by Julia Donaldson and Victoria Sandoy, that she would recommend it beacause it is really fun and it has a lovely story and has lovely pictures. The book is about an oak tree growing and the people and animals that lived and played around it over the many years it lived. Samantha's favourite part was when the alcorn grew into an oak tree because trees make good shelter for animals! She gave the book a 5 star rating too!
Thanks Samantha. The Oak Tree is on the shelf now, ready to be borrowed.
May is National Family Reading month! If you didn't get a new book for your family bookshelf at home from our Book Fair, make sure your child has their library bag (for years Prep to 3) so they can borrow a book from our library to share with you at home. Read more in May!
......and that means, that it's the perfect time to also start the Premier's Reading Challenge!
The PRC is not a competition but a way to encourage students to develop a love of reading for life. Students are encouraged to select a range of fiction and non-fiction books suited to their reading ability and record books read during the reading period, from 7 May to 23 August.
All Prep and Year 1 students will receive a letter and record form. Students in all other year levels, are offered to chance to opt in and will then receive a letter and form also.
Please find both the letter and the form, available to download via the link, below.
