Every Day Counts - Attendance
Regular, punctual attendance at school is expected of all students.
Students should be present at school ready to prepare for the day's learning by 8:30am.
Late Arrivals
Students arriving after 8:50am must report to the office to receive a lateslip. If a student is late, a letter of explanation from the student's parent/guardian must be presented to the office staff on arrival.
Absence
If a student is absent and the parent/guardian has not notified the school, they will receive an automated text message by 10am that day.
Parents will receive a text message informing them that their child is absent. If you receive one of these text messages, please contact the school to explain the reason for your child’s absence.
A working mobile number should be registered with the school, if available.
Please remember that absence is only marked for the days specified by the parents. If you ring up on a Monday informing that your child is sick and they remain away from school for the following 2 days because they are sick you need to inform us that this was the reason for their absence. You can inform us after the absence via a message directly to the teacher or by contacting our absence hotline or email.
If your child is absent, please leave a message detailing:
- Child's name
- Class
- Reason for absence
- Dates or duration of absence
Absence Hotline - 4726 1260
Absence Email - absences@cranbrookss.eq.edu.au
PBL - Positive Behaviour for Learning
For Week 4, our PBL lesson was about being an Up-Stander, being someone who takes action against negative behaviour in the community.
In Week 5, we focused on remembering to encourage and support others.
Here are the flyers with some handy hints with what and how to chat about this at home.

Healthy Snack/Brain Food Snack
Many of our teachers allow students to have a healthy/brain food snack in their class. Please make sure the 'brain builder/healthy' food is easy to eat with fingers and is not messy or drippy.
- Some suggestions for healthy snack are:
- Dried fruit e.g. apricots, prunes, raisins, sultanas
- Fresh vegetables e.g. carrots, celery sticks, beans, snow peas
- Rice Cakes
- Cheese sticks and cubes
- Seeds e.g. sunflower, sesame, linseed
- Fresh fruit e.g. grapes, apple pieces, blueberries, strawberries, baby tomatoes
- Chickpeas and other legumes
DO NOT send any of the following:
- Processed foods e.g. muesli bars, biscuits, cakes
- Lollies or anything high in sugar
- Chips and Crisps
- Bread
Conflict
Conflict is natural and inevitable in every aspects of life. Conflict generally comes across as negative. However, confrontation of ideas and attitudes is natural and essential to our human existence. The management of conflict determines whether it will have negative or positive consequences on our relationships. A well-managed conflict can actually strengthen a relationship.
The following are some tips you might consider to strengthen the relationship or partnership:
- Do not make it personal.
- Avoid putting down the other person's ideas and beliefs. Resist the temptation to abuse, use sarcasm, or make derogatory comments. This will allow you to get your point across in the most effective way.
- Use "I" statements to communicate how you feel, what you think, and what you want or need. We need to avoid using "you" statements, as these can sound argumentative.
- Listen to others’ point of view. Consider and respect the other person's perspective.
- Stay calm. This is not easy; it is a huge challenge to stay calm and rational when you feel angry or passionate about something.
As adults, we need to model these behaviour and actions to our children.
In this contemporary era we live in, social media has become a primary medium through which individuals voice their opinions. While the ability to express one’s thoughts through the internet is wonderful, it is also important that individuals learn how to do so respectfully. If you want to ensure that you avoid offending others when sharing your thoughts, think it through before posting. Unfortunately, either we shy away completely from disagreements or we lose it when things don't go our way.
Before School Supervision
Thanks to our amazing P&C, students in the morning have a sheltered space to congregate until the school gates open at 8.00am, however, during this time there is NO SUPERVISION and as such students are left to their own devices.
When students are left to their own devices they can sometimes make poor choices regarding being SAFE, RESPONSIBLE and RESPECTFUL. Some concerns that have already been experienced by parents are:
- Students leaving the school grounds and walking to another address: KFC, Servo, Peers homes
- Students injuring themselves due to unsafe actions: running, jumping, climbing
- Students injuring other students due to unsafe actions: hitting, kicking, pushing
- High school students who have dropped their siblings off remaining in the sheltered area and interacting with students.
As a school, we will follow up and behaviours that breach the Cranbrook State School Student Code of Conduct if parents or students report any incidences once they enter the school grounds. Individual students may be restricted in their access to the school grounds when no supervision is available if ongoing and repeated behaviours place themselves or others at risk.
The Cranbrook Outside Hours School Care provides supervision from 6.30am and provide clients with a safe and enriched space both before and after school.
I am sure as parents continue to drop their children off before 8.00am there will continue to be circumstances that place their child at risk of harm.
We are in a fortunate circumstance that our school provides a space inside the school grounds for our students to congregate as other schools (with new security fences) are required to ensure safety and security measures are adhered to by NOT opening their perimeter gates until supervision is provided by the school.
Illness
We also want to respect our fellow classmates and teachers when it comes to our children being sick. Please familiarise yourself with Queensland Health's Timeout poster, to use as a guide as to how long your child should be kept at home when they are unwell. Thanks for your support.

QLD All Schools Success!!!Over the weekend the Cranbrook Mixed Touch Team competed in the QLD All Schools Touch Competition. Starting the day with a Round of 16 win 2-1 over St Kevin’s. They then played in a tough quarter final winning 4-3 in extra time over Miami. The Semi Final also went to extra time with the Cranbrook side coming out victorious 3-2 over Banksia Beach. Unfortunately, the Grand Final didn’t go our way, losing 2-4 to a strong Park Lake side. Mindfulness Hub
We would love for you to have a read and take a look at our wonderful Mindfulness Hub and read a bit about why we have it and why it is so important.
Our mindfulness hub is broken into 2 Spaces
1. Our Mindfulness Play - Open during lunch breaks for self-regulation and for having a safe calm space to settle down
2. Our Mindfulness Learning - Broken into 3 learning stations, we have Prep -2, 3-4 and 5-6 For Focused Teaching Episodes (FTE) which involves learning from our SEP Teachers or Class Teachers for students who are in need.
Rationale for the Mindfulness Centre:
MINDFULNESS MATTERS
The MINDFULNESS CENTRE at Cranbrook State School is a place for students to practice mindfulness exercises to assist in the development of a positive and accepting attitude to learning and engagement.
It supports student’s minds to be fully attending to what’s happening, to what they are doing, to the space they are moving through.
A student’s mind takes flight, loses touch with their body, and pretty soon becomes engrossed in obsessive thoughts about something that just happened or fretting about the future task. And that makes a student anxious.
Children of all ages can benefit from mindfulness, the simple practice of bringing a gentle, accepting attitude to the present moment by promoting happiness, relieving stress and develops compassion, focus, curiosity and empathy.
Learning how to be mindful when children are young gives the child a chance to get really good at it and use it always.
What is Mindfulness?
Mindfulness means paying full attention to something. It means slowing down to really notice what you're doing. Being mindful is the opposite of rushing or multitasking. When you're mindful, you're taking your time. You're focusing in a relaxed, easy way.
