Principal's Message
Well, here we are, at the end of a wonderful, busy and exciting term for us!
Annual School Report
Each year, all schools in Queensland publish a report on their school's progress and achievements for the previous year. The report is a version of our review and reflection which is completed at the end of each academic year (which is the same for all schools).
School annual reports are a key governance and communication mechanism for schools and their communities to help express and celebrate the focus, activities and outcomes of schooling each year. Our 2023 school annual report is available to view on our school website.
(You may also like to take a look at our Annual Improvement Plan and our Strategic Plan found under 'Documents' on our website.)
Breakfast Club
Our school Breakfast Club is very popular every morning. A big shout out and thanks to those parents who regularly donate items so that the children have an opportunity to have a healthy start before their learning each day. This initiative is only possible with the support from our major supporter, Food Relief North Queensland and other various charities, church groups and of course, our wonderful Cranbrook parents.
Thank you.
Extra Curricula Activities
With the exception of The Arts, Extra-Curricular options for Term 3 will be advertised in Week 1, with most activities beginning in Week 2.
Drama excellence, Visual Arts Excellence, Musical Rehearsals, Sports Excellence, Sports Enthusiasts, STEM Excellence, as well as all music and choir groups, will recommence in Week 1.
Reporting
Report Cards will be distributed on Friday, 19 July and no parent teacher interviews will be offered as part of this process. However, you are reminded that you can request a meeting with your child’s teacher any day about any concern that you have. Our staff email list can be found on our website, or via the link below.
Staffing Update – Term 3
Miss Renee Digger (formerly 3A) will move to the SEP Team Wednesday/Thursday/Friday to support Prep students.
Mrs Corrine Craperi (formerly 3A) will move to an LRT (Local Relief Teacher) position Monday/Tuesday.
Ms Samantha McIntyre will be full time in 3A.
Ms Jacqui Howlett will take up a LRT position Monday/Tuesday/Thursday/Friday.

Keep a watch on our school these holidays
Please help to take care of our school over the holidays, by reporting any suspicious after-hours activity to School Watch on 13 17 88. By keeping an eye out we can work together to create a safer school community and help to reduce vandalism, theft and arson in our school.
If you see something suspicious, please don't intervene. Call the School Watch number and let the local police or State Government Protective Security Service deal with the matter.
I wish you all a safe mid-year break and look forward to seeing you all next term.
Term 3 commences Monday 8th July.

Coming up in Term 3

Every Day Counts - Attendance
Regular, punctual attendance at school is expected of all students.
Students should be present at school ready to prepare for the day's learning by 8:30am.
Late Arrivals
Students arriving after 8:50am must report to the office to receive a lateslip. If a student is late, a letter of explanation from the student's parent/guardian must be presented to the office staff on arrival.
Absence
If a student is absent and the parent/guardian has not notified the school, they will receive an automated text message by 10am that day.
Parents will receive a text message informing them that their child is absent. If you receive one of these text messages, please contact the school to explain the reason for your child’s absence.
A working mobile number should be registered with the school, if available.
Please remember that absence is only marked for the days specified by the parents. If you ring up on a Monday informing that your child is sick and they remain away from school for the following 2 days because they are sick you need to inform us that this was the reason for their absence. You can inform us after the absence via a message directly to the teacher or by contacting our absence hotline or email.
If your child is absent, please leave a message detailing:
- Child's name
- Class
- Reason for absence
- Dates or duration of absence
Absence Hotline - 4726 1260
Absence Email - absences@cranbrookss.eq.edu.au
PBL - Positive Behaviour for Learning
In Week 9, we looked at being respectful and making sure we respect others' privacy and property.
This week, we looked at being responsible and working on being resilient.
Below are the 'for families' poster of our lessons, which gives you a chance to continue these conversations at home and possibly apply them to your daily family life.
Congratulations to our Week 9 Snappy Draw winner.....Pippa!
Congratulations to our double draw winners for Week 10, Bodhi and Student H.
Our weekly $10 'Golden Snap' draw for Week 9, went to Student D and for Week 10, it was Alliannah.
Snappy Celebrations
At the end of every term, for those students who have not received a major (behaviour), a fun few hours of activities awaits them. Here's what we got up to today....
Bullying....no way!
Sometimes we just can't change what is happening around us or to us but we can change the way we react and deal with it and so it's important to build resilience, in order to help us through.
To finish off the term and our feature on Bullying, here are some strategies for helping to build resilience.
We hope our segments have helped in understanding what bullying is and how we can help ourselves and our children, move through it.
Uniform Reminder
As the cool weather approaches the Cranbrook P&C have reinforced that Cranbrook State School is a UNIFORM school. This includes the winter uniform of jumpers and jackets.
Thank you to those parents who have been able to ensure their child represents the school with pride by wearing the school’s Winter Uniform.
For those who haven't yet purchased a jacket or jumper, the Uniform Shop is open each morning from 8-9am and payment may be made by cash or card. Alternatively, you can order via the P&C’s Big Commerce website and the purchase will be delivered to your child's classroom.
The school jacket is $45. The school jumper is $30.
The website is: https://cranbrook-state-school-pc-association.mybigcommerce.com/
*****************************************
Each day students have a Cranbrook Jacket or Jumper with them, they will receive a 'snap' and go in the whole school draw for a chance to win a $5 tuckshop voucher each week.
Congratulations to our Week 9 winner, Ashton and to our Week 10 winner, Gavin.
Cranbrook jumpers/jackets
Cranbrook jumpers and jackets are a part of our compulsory uniform. Not only are they necessary for the cooler weather, they are also handy to have in the airconditioned classrooms - no matter what time of the year. Our P&C have worked hard to be able to offer you two lovely, good quality and practical options.
The jacket is light, windproof and spray proof, has two zipped hand pockets and is lined with soft knit material, making it ideal for wearing at any time. The cost is $45.
The fleece pullover also has two zipped hand pockets and a zip near the neck, allowing the child to protect their neck in the cold but gives the option of having some extra air if it's getting a bit warm. This is our more economical option at $30.
From The Arts
Imagine a Dragon
is our 2024 Musical, being performed by our Year 4 and 5 students (with some additional Year 6 friends).
28 and 29 August
Musical Rehearsals will continue in Term 3.
Costume Note
We had a wonderful evening of entertainment at Cranbrook Creates last week.
Thank you to our dedicated teachers and staff helpers and to you, our students' family and friends for your support.
Week 9's Arts Class of the Week goes to.....
** Mr Nosworthy's 4B **
We might make a note here too, to say a huge well done to Chase, on being the Cookie Dough's highest tub seller!!! Awesome effort, Chase. Well done to Chelsea too, here in the photo and to all the other students who were rewarded with prizes for their efforts.
From the Sports Desk....
Interschool Sport (Touch Football and Soccer) will resume again in Week 1, for those students who have paid their fees.
Skye and Peyton competed in Rockhampton at the 10-12 years State Touch Football Championships, representing Northern. The team had an excellent four days away, finishing 3rd overall and winning the bronze medal at the tournament. Well done, girls.
Athletics Day
What a great day we had!!! Thank you Mrs McMinn and all our staff involved in making it such fun. Thanks to all our community who came to support us and thanks too, to Townsville Montessori for joining us.
A very big WELL DONE to Cooradilla on their win and a huge congratulations to our Age Champion winners.
Learning at Cranbrook
Learning is always in full swing here at Cranbrook and the last two weeks of the term are especially busy as classes knuckle down and get through assessments. It does sometimes come with a bit of fun though as you will see from the smiles on the faces of our students!
PREP LEARNING
YEAR 2 LEARNING
Practising their measurement.
YEAR 3 LEARNING
Here are this term's recipients of our Cranbrook Quality Learner Awards. Well done, everyone.
YEAR 4 LEARNING
Year 4 students took their learning outside and did some maths application for real!
They also began designing their pinball machines!
YEAR 5 LEARNING
Here are this term's recipients of our Cranbrook Quality Learner Awards. Well done, everyone.
YEAR 6 LEARNING
Year 6 students had to write and publish a digital multimodal short story for their assessment.
They then went and read the story to the Preps, who, of course, just loved it!
Read some of them below, for yourself!
Global Tropics - Round 1
Our students with their certificates from Round 1.
In Round 1, our Year 6 students participated in the 'Skill Builder' program Biomechanics. Biomechanics is the science of movement of a living body, including how muscles, bones, tendons and ligaments work together to produce movement. Biomechanics is part of the larger field of kinesiology, specifically focusing on the mechanics of the movement. Throughout this Skill Builder, students immersed themselves in the world of our bodies' movement patterns, link with CQUniversity experts in biomechanics, as well as hear real-life applications of biomechanics from industry professionals.
Faith's eyes lit up when asked how this program was! She especially loved the practical applications they tried out.
Some of our Year 5 students participated in the 'Grand Challenge' program, Australian Native Species. Did you know, some eighty percent of our flora and fauna are unique to Australia! Some of Australia's most iconic fauna species include the kangaroo, emu, koala, platypus, echidna and wombat. There are, however, a number of challenges facing our most loved native species, as well as some others that are lesser known. Throughout this Grand Challenge, students worked alongside Queensland Parks and Wildlife personnel and University researchers to develop a deeper understanding of the roles some of Australia's lesser-known species have in healthy ecosystems and what they can do now to prevent the mass extinction that is occurring in Australia at present.
Annalise thoroughly enjoyed the research that she had to do in this program. She LOVED the whole thing!
Other Year 5 students participated in the 'Skill Builder' program, Biomimicry (Designed by Nature). Have you ever wondered why the shark is such an effective hunter? Or how geckos stick to the roof of your house? Or even how spiders inhabit absolutely anywhere in your home? This Skill Builder will help students understand how these naturally occurring anatomical structures have come to be and how we might utilise that information to make our lives easier.
Sienna, Kadisha and Flynn, all gave Biomimicry the thumbs up! Their task was to think of a new invention, inspired by the works of nature, that would help Queenslanders out with a problem. The group decided to put the idea of an oyster filter to the design test.
Solid Pathways - Year 5
Challenge Games 2024
For students with a disability, The Challenge Games provides a wonderful opportunity for children with a disability to play games, have fun and compete against other children of the same ability level – without the feeling of being conspicuous or ‘different’.
Cranbrook is registered to attend the Challenge Games on Wednesday 24th July 2024 (the 1st day of the 2 day event). There is a limited number of places (20) for this event due to the seats in our school bus. The students attending will be supervised by SEP Teachers and Teacher Aides. The cost is $10 per student.
If you would like your student with a disability to attend, please contact the Office and register.
Parents are welcome to attend and register for the 2nd day and attend with their child, independent of the school. Please use the Challenge Games registration link: https://thechallengegames.com.au/register/parent-registration/
More information can be found on the Challenge Games website via the link below.

Class Borrowing Days
For students in Prep / Year 1 / Year 2 / Year 3…..you must have a library bag to protect your books.
It is very important that books are returned every week.
Students are not allowed to borrow more books until any outstanding ones are returned.
Please return your child’s home reader and library books on the following days:
Book Review
A Book Review by Year 5 student, Isabelle, on 'Talking to Alaska'.
Did you like the book? Yes, it was a very good book - very interesting - I was sucked in as soon as I read the first page!!!!
What was the book about? A girl named Parker misses her old dog, Alaska and is determined to find her. Then a boy named Sven, a kid with epilepsy, has Alaska. Parker hated him at first but then she warmed up to him and they became friends.
What was your favourite part? When Parker and Sven get along.
Would you recommend the book? Why? Yes, like I said, it is very interesting and has some funny things in it.
How many stars would you rate it? 5 stars!
Thanks Isabelle. 'Talking to Alaska' is now on our bookshelf and available to borrow.
The holidays are the perfect time, to get stuck into completing the Premier's Reading Challenge!
The PRC is not a competition but a way to encourage students to develop a love of reading for life. Students are encouraged to select a range of fiction and non-fiction books suited to their reading ability and record books read during the reading period, from 7 May to 23 August.
All Prep and Year 1 students will receive a letter and record form. Students in all other year levels, are offered to chance to opt in and will then receive a letter and form also.
Please find both the letter and the form, available to download via the link, below.
NAIDOC Week
NAIDOC Week is coming up and so we're asking our families to help us celebrate!
Activity days are Thursday, 22 July and Friday, 23 July.
If you feel you can help in any way, please get in contact with us by email at principal@cranbrookss.eq.edu.au or by phone on 47261222.
Thank you!
From your P&C
Hearing Health Screening
Applicable Indigenous students were given an information letter and permission form to take home and complete, a couple of weeks ago.
Forms should have been returned yesterday, however, if you have completed the form, please still hand it in to us, in case there is another opportunity.
Accurate hearing is really important for all children.
Thank you for supporting your child.
Free Dress Day Fun
To celebrate Game 1, we had a State of Origin free dress day. There was some fun rivalry around the place, but maybe a little more tense in the Jamieson household! We were happy to see that the Maroons prevailed though.
Thanks everyone, for your support.
