Principal's Message
Investiture Ceremony
The Investiture Ceremony is on Thursday, 25th February in Week 5 at 2:15pm.
Traffic Problems
Many schools face the challenge of traffic congestion at drop off and pick up times with regard to finding a car park. Please don't forget that you can make use of the numerous car parking spaces on Bergin Road and Albert Street. Patience is needed at these very busy times to maximise safety and wellbeing of our students. Please remember to keep the traffic flowing through the drop off and pick up zone out the front of the school.
Parent Volunteer Course
The parent volunteer course will now be conducted by classroom teachers. If you are interested in volunteering you will need to see your child's teacher and do the 10 minute annual update.
Year 5 & 6 Laptop Information Session
Parents of Year 5 & 6 students who have missed the Laptop Information Sessions may contact the Cohort Leaders to arrange a time to complete a session. This session must be completed in order for your child to participate in the 1 to 1 or BYOL program. Please contact either:
Year 5 Cohort Leader - Amy Kennett akenn233@eq.edu.au
Year 6 Cohort Leader - Nicole Bartels nbart47@eq.edu.au
Extra Curricular Activities
Our first round of extra curricular activities have begun or will begin shortly and will conclude at the end of week 9. These activities are offered voluntarily by staff which is greatly appreciated not only by students and parents but by me as well.
To organise these extra curricula activities efficiently so that other essential services provided by our school are not interrupted, we will publish the available Term 1 extra curricular activities next week via the newsletter and a paper note to every student in the school.
All students are invited to attend the activities session and parents will be informed if their child is unable to continue to attend due to high student participation rates as activities are limited to a maximum of 25 students in most cases. Some activities have smaller maximum numbers which is at the teachers discretion.
We Say No to Bullying
Bullying is intentional, repeated behaviour by an individual or group of individuals that causes distress, hurt or undue pressure.
Bullying involves the abuse of power in relationships.
When these things are done repeatedly to the same person, it is bullying.
- Taking someone's belongings
- Giving someone a rude gesture
- Telling hurtful stories about someone
- Teasing someone about their appearance
- Sending nasty SMS messages
- Kicking, shoving or hitting someone
What to do?
- The Cranbrook way
- The Stop Signal
- Walk away
- Talk (report problems to an adult)

Every Day Counts - Attendance
Regular, punctual attendance at school is expected of all students. Students should be present at school ready to prepare for the day's learning by 8:30am.
Late Arrivals
Students arriving after 8:50am must report to the office to receive a lateslip. If a student is late, a letter of explanation from the student's parent/guardian must be presented to the office staff on arrival.
Absence
If a student is absent and the parent/guardian has not notified the school, they will receive an automated text message by 10am that day.
Parents will receive a text message informing them that their child is absent. If you receive one of these text messages, please contact the school to explain the reason for your child’s absence.
A working mobile number should be registered with the school, if available.
Please remember that absence is only marked for the days specified by the parents. If you ring up on a Monday informing that your child is sick and they remain away from school for the following 2 days because they are sick you need to inform us that this was the reason for their absence. You can inform us after the absence via a message directly to the teacher or by contacting our absence hotline or email.
If your child is absent, please leave a message detailing:
- Child's name
- Class
- Reason for absence
- Dates or duration of absence
Absence Hotline - 4726 1260
Absence Email - absences@cranbrookss.eq.edu.au
Absence For More Than 10 Days
What is an exemption and why do I need it?
Every parent of a child of compulsory school age has a legal obligation to ensure their child is enrolled and attending school. Parents can apply for an exemption from this obligation when their child cannot attend or it would be unreasonable in all the circumstances for their child to attend school for a period of more than 10 consecutive school days.
Situations where an application for an exemption may be made include:
- Illness
- Family reasons
- Cultural or religious reasons
If your child is exempt from compulsory schooling, you are excused from your obligation in relation to compulsory schooling.
The school principal is not responsible for providing an educational program for your child, however they may provide advice on other educational options available. Decisions about exemptions for up to one school year are made by the principal and decisions about exemptions for more than one school year are made by the relevant Regional Director of the Department of Education, Training and Employment, responsible for the supervision of the school your child attends.

Reading - Explicit Improvement Agenda
Reading every night is so important for developing your child's reading abilities and building their vocabulary.
This week we are providing some information on how to support your child before they read their text they have bought home or chosen from home. Try to start creating this discussion as a regular thing each night before reading a book.
From the Resource Centre
Have you seen Mrs Shepherd's little library? She made it in the holidays and is now a part of the Cranbrook Library...but it needs a special name. Place your creative name for the library in the competition box before Friday Week 4 and you could win a small prize and the naming rights to the little library.
Please remind your child to bring their library books back every week so that they are engaging in home reading. An email will be sent home every fortnight listing the books that are overdue. We value reading at Cranbrook State School and encourage ALL students to read every day. It's amazing to see the benefits of reading for more than 10 minutes a day can have.
What's On in Year 2
This term, students in Year 2 are learning about combining materials to make a lunchbox which will carry an orange and a sandwich.
We require materials to make the lunchboxes. These include:
- foil
- gladwrap
- cardboard (small food boxes work well)

The Arts Space
This week saw the start of a Year 6 Prep collaboration. During this time Year 6 students taught their prep buddy a rhyme using the letter of their name and the Preps had fun teaching Year 6 how to dance. We look forward to more exciting collaborations throughout the year!
Year 1's have also been learning about Ta and Ti-Ti and they wrote the song Apple Tree using Ta and Ti-Ti symbols.

- First Contact (parent/guardian) - address, email and phone numbers
