PBL - Positive Behaviour for Learning
In Week 5 we looked at being respectful and learning how to be encouraging and supporting of others.
This week, we looked at being responsible and being determined to improve.
Below are the 'for families' poster of our lessons, which gives you a chance to continue these conversations at home and possibly apply them to your daily family life.
Congratulations to this week's Snappy Draw winner, Parker!
Our weekly $10 'Golden Snap' draw for this week, went to Alex!

Instrumental achievements
Clever cookies, Cecilia and Arliah, earned their silver sash this week, for ukulele.
Sophia and Amelia have both worked hard on their gold level and were duly awarded recently.
Sisters, Vivian and Julian, are doing everything side by side and this week together accomplished their white sash for recorder!
Year 2 Arts
The challenge for Year 2 students at the moment, is to take an ‘old-style portrait’ using their i-Pads.
They needed to make sure:
- The subject is in the middle third of the photo.
- The photo is EDITED to be in black and white OR sepia
- The subject/s are not smiling
- The background is plain
- The clothing looks old-fashioned
Here are some of their amazing results!

From the Sports Desk....
Interschool Sport (Touch Football and Soccer) has now finished.
We hope you all had fun!
Touch Football Wrap Up
Thursday saw the conclusion of the 2024 Interschool Sport Touch Season. Cranbrook were well represented with 45 students and 6 teams participating in the competition. Our competitive teams performed strongly throughout the competition, with our Year 5 Boys going through the season undefeated to be crowned Premiers. Our Year 6 Boys played in a very tough Grand Final coming away winners 4-3. Finally, our Year 6 Girls were dominant throughout the season, this continued in the Grand Final with the girls winning 7-2.
Our Touch Players now turn their focus to preparing to go to Brisbane and compete at the QLD Primary School All Schools. We are extremely grateful to our sponsors for this trip and their continued support afterwards:

This week, we acknowledged 2 high achievers from Year 3, who earnt Academic Achievement Awards for Semester 1. Congratulations to Amelia and Kaiden.
Solid Pathways STEM Excursion
What a fun day we had! Our Year 4, 5 & 6 Solid Pathways students were invited to spend a day out at our local university, JCU, doing a variety of very interesting STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths) experiments - some with disappointing results, some with outstanding results that had us amazed!
Thanks to the organisers of the day - especially for our yummy lunch!
Global Tropics
Our Global Tropics Program for Round 2 came to a conclusion last week.
Our Year 5 students were doing 'Astro 101'.....To understand how galaxies formed, we need your help to classify them according to their shapes. If you’re quick, you may even be the first person to see the galaxies you’re asked to classify. Look at telescope images of distant galaxies. Explore the sky. What will you find? The newly launched James Webb telescope is allowing us to look further into space than ever before. This Grand Challenge introduces students to the concept of citizen science focusing on classifying galaxies. Students are asked to investigate and use scientific tools to recognise and interpret characteristic galaxy patterns using the images taken by telescopes and stored in the Galaxy Zoo database. Students explore galaxy properties in the context of their own research question using data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. The project is designed to be open-ended to provide students with the opportunity to experience how to conduct real research.
Here's what they thought about the program....
Sienna loved discovering the different galaxies that are in space. She was surprised to learn that every single known galaxy is named!
Sienna's partner in GT was Annalise. Annalise loved researching and discovering the colours of the elliptical galaxies. She enjoyed discovering the many galaxies that there are and identifying them.
Kadisha was excited at attempting to learn the names (and names and names) of the many (many) galaxies. Does she recommend Global Tropics? Absolutely!
Flynn just loves learning anything and everything about space. He was blown away by the number of different galaxies there actually are!
This is Sarah. Unfortunately, Sarah wasn't able to talk at the time of the interview - she was about to do her presentation to the rest of her GT group (not just Cranbrook Students), on what she had discovered throughout this space journey. You'll have to track Sarah down if you want to know just what she did discover!
International Day of the Tropics
16 lucky Global Tropics students were able to venture out to JCU for a STEM Grand Challenge, engaging with other GT students across Townsville, Ingham, Trebonne, Ayr, Home Hill, Bowen, Queens Beach and Abergowrie, to find ways to protect endangered species from feral pests. The students were very fortunate to hear a presentation from Dr Conrad Hoskin, Associate Professor - Biodiversity & Conservation Biologist and his work with protecting quolls and frogs.
Our students were split into different groups - none of our students were together, which was quite daunting for most of them! It wasn't long though and through some ice breaker questions, they were talking with their new acquaintances and beginning to tackle their challenge together.
The groups brain-stormed for the morning up until their break for lunch. After that, they had just one more hour to work on their solutions, create a poster and practice their 3 minute presentation to the other small groups working within their building.
What these kids achieved - the ideas they came up with and their process and justification of it all, was amazing! A big well done to them all. A special congratulations to Faith and Jordon, who were part of winning groups.
A huge thanks to QVSA, JCU and local Townsville Power STEM Girls, for organising our day and supporting us throughout!

ONE MORE WEEK TO GO!!!
Don't forget about the Premier's Reading Challenge! Not long to go now!
The PRC is not a competition but a way to encourage students to develop a love of reading for life. Students are encouraged to select a range of fiction and non-fiction books suited to their reading ability and record books read during the reading period, from 7 May to 23 August.
Thanks to all those students who have already sent back their forms.
