Principal's Message
QKR!
Don’t forget Cranbrook State School provides our parents with another option to increase the convenience around school finances. Parents are able to pay all school payments (SRS, Camps, Excursions, Guitar Lessons, Swimming Lessons, Sports, Performances) and all TUCKSHOP ORDERS online. Please feel free to watch the links to see how it works.

QSchools App
Our school is committed to keeping all parents fully informed on up and coming events and opportunities to become involved in your child’s education. The QSchools app will assist you to stay up to date on all of our school’s events. To download the QSchoolsApp and receive the latest news on our school, simply go to the iTunes store or Google Play and search for ‘QSchools’ or use the following link for more information:

School Student Resource and Stationery Scheme 2021
Congratulations to those parents (98.5% of families) who joined the scheme this year. For those parents who decided on supplying their own materials, you are reminded that all items need to be supplied by the end of this week, otherwise you will be invoiced for the 2021 SRS amount of $150 to access the school resources. Please feel free to contact our Business Manager, Deana Edwards to discuss this further.
Electronic Devices
Electronic Devices (other than approved laptops) MUST be handed in when students arrive at school NOT at 8.30.
The staff carpark is for staff
Please do not park in there when picking up your children after school. Parents are reminded that the school staff car park is not a safe place for children to be delivered or collected from school.
A reminder also, that dropping students off on or near the pedestrian crossing on Bergin Road is also very unsafe as it endangers the lives of children using the crossing correctly.
School Hats
Some students have reported their hats have gone missing. The chances of their hat going missing could be greatly reduced by writing the child's name (or Initials/symbol) on the OUTSIDE brim instead of on the inside. A supervising staff member can then easily see if the hat belongs to that student. Staff, especially teachers, do not have the time to do hat inspections as we are busy teaching your child the Australian Curriculum as well as catering for their physical, social and emotional needs. Remember - No Cranbrook Hat = No Play.
Positive Behaviour for Learning
Congratulations to those students who were invited to their class celebration for positive behaviour. Every student who received 15 SNAPS (our school mascot (SNAPPY THE CROCODILE) link to positivity) in the first five weeks were invited to the celebration. As a school we were pleased that 100% of students attended, with the exception of those students who were either suspended (behaviour so serious that it required their right to education to be suspended due to extreme misbehaviour, extreme disobedience or conduct that effected the school operations and/or the safety of students) or on an EXIT so the rights or teachers to teach and the students to learn could be re-established.
For those who are unaware of what PBL:
Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) is an educational process that brings together the whole-school community to contribute to developing a positive, safe and supportive learning culture. The PBL framework assists schools to improve social, emotional, behavioural and academic outcomes for children and young people.
PBL is a process, not a program.
When PBL is implemented well, teachers and students have more time to focus on relationships and classroom instruction.
Students and staff benefit from:
- reduced problem behaviour
- increased time focused on instruction
- improved social-emotional wellbeing
- positive and respectful relationships among students and staff
- better support for teachers to teach, model and respond effectively to student needs
- a predictable learning environment where staff and students know what is expected to deliver effective practices that can be sustained over time.

Every Day Counts - Attendance
Regular, punctual attendance at school is expected of all students. Students should be present at school ready to prepare for the day's learning by 8:30am.
Late Arrivals
Students arriving after 8:50am must report to the office to receive a lateslip. If a student is late, a letter of explanation from the student's parent/guardian must be presented to the office staff on arrival.
Absence
If a student is absent and the parent/guardian has not notified the school, they will receive an automated text message by 10am that day.
Parents will receive a text message informing them that their child is absent. If you receive one of these text messages, please contact the school to explain the reason for your child’s absence.
A working mobile number should be registered with the school, if available.
Please remember that absence is only marked for the days specified by the parents. If you ring up on a Monday informing that your child is sick and they remain away from school for the following 2 days because they are sick you need to inform us that this was the reason for their absence. You can inform us after the absence via a message directly to the teacher or by contacting our absence hotline or email.
If your child is absent, please leave a message detailing:
- Child's name
- Class
- Reason for absence
- Dates or duration of absence
Absence Hotline - 4726 1260
Absence Email - absences@cranbrookss.eq.edu.au
Absence For More Than 10 Days
What is an exemption and why do I need it?
Every parent of a child of compulsory school age has a legal obligation to ensure their child is enrolled and attending school. Parents can apply for an exemption from this obligation when their child cannot attend or it would be unreasonable in all the circumstances for their child to attend school for a period of more than 10 consecutive school days.
Situations where an application for an exemption may be made include:
- Illness
- Family reasons
- Cultural or religious reasons
If your child is exempt from compulsory schooling, you are excused from your obligation in relation to compulsory schooling.
The school principal is not responsible for providing an educational program for your child, however they may provide advice on other educational options available. Decisions about exemptions for up to one school year are made by the principal and decisions about exemptions for more than one school year are made by the relevant Regional Director of the Department of Education, Training and Employment, responsible for the supervision of the school your child attends.
Attendance Award Week 6
Positive Behaviour For Learning
Congratulations to Ruby in Year 5, who is this week's PBL Assembly Draw Winner.
Zones of Regulation
Students at Cranbrook, participate in the Zones of Regulation Curriculum which are lessons that help students to gain skills in the area of self-regulation.
Learning to identify and regulate emotions can be difficult for some children. The curriculum and activities aim to create a comfortable and supportive environment for them to harness techniques to get to and remain in the green zone where they can be productive and content.
In addition to addressing self-regulation, the students also build an increased vocabulary of emotional terms, skills in reading other people's facial expressions, perspective on how others see and react to their behaviour, insight into events that trigger their behaviour, calming and alerting strategies and problem solving skills.
There are no wrong or bad zones. There are "expected zones for different situations and the program assists children to make safe and good choices to help them when they are in the Yellow or Red Zones. The curriculum also offers strategies on how to process the circumstances afterwards - what led to the Red Zone and the things they could do differently next time.

Year 5 Daradgee Camp - Expression of Interest
During Term 2, Week 10 (22nd – 25th June 2021), Year 5 students will have the opportunity to attend a Camp at Daradgee Environmental Education Centre, 11km north of Innisfail.
The camp will cost approximately $260 - $300 per child depending on numbers.
At this stage, we are trying to work out roughly how many children will be attending. Should your child not attend the camp they will be involved in normal lessons at school.
You may wish to start a payment plan with the school so that it is not such a large lump sum to pay when the camp date arrives. Please see the office staff about this.
*Please note: If your Student Resource and Stationery Scheme fees have not been paid, or an active payment plan is not in place, your child is unable to attend.
Also, please be advised that school behaviour policies apply regarding camp attendance.
Contact your child’s teacher if you have any questions.
- Accommodation – The students stay in dormitory style accommodation (Boys and Girls separate).
- Food and Travel – The food will be served in a dining hall and include cooked breakfasts, morning/afternoon tea, lunches and dinners. The students travel by bus.
- Activities – Some of the activities included are: boating, top rope climbing, mohawk walk, challenge games and investigating bug and plant adaptations at Polly Creek.
More information, medical forms and ‘what to bring’ information will be sent home closer to the departure date.
*A non-refundable deposit of $50 will need to be paid as an “intention to attend” by Friday 24th March 2021 with final payment due Friday 11th June 2021.
A letter and permission note has been handed out to all year 5 students earlier this week. Please contact the office if you require a new note.

2021 Qld Virtual STEM Academy Program
I have the privilege of coordinating nine Cranbrook students in the Global Tropics Future Young Scholars program where they enter a virtual world on laptops with students from other primary schools, teachers from Thuringowa High School and guest speakers from James Cook University. Within the virtual online classroom they solve open-ended scientific inquiry problems involving Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).
Year 5 students: Mikhala, Hunter, Noah and Janeva began the program last week where they were introduced to the basic skills of iSee virtual platform. They met their teacher Mr Askin and other students in the program from Cloncurry, Ingham, Richmond Hill, Charters Towers and Thuringowa schools in preparation for their collaborative work in the upcoming weeks.
Year 6 students: Malakai, Boyd, Sami, Ayla and Rayne are researching the current Agricultural Practices in Australia, Type of Crop Production and the Impacts on Germination. The students will conduct experiments about germination during their 10 week course.

NAPLAN Online 2021
This year Cranbrook will be re-engaging with NAPLAN online. We have had great success with online in the past and look forward to more success in 2021. Below is some information to familiarise yourselves with so you are aware of what happens on the ground.
NAPLAN Online test window
The NAPLAN Online test window is nine days. Day 1 is a Tuesday and Day 9 is the Friday of the following week.
The writing test must be scheduled within a two-day test window and schools must schedule writing from the first day of the appropriate two-day test window. For Year 5, the writing window is day 1 and 2. For Years 7 and 9, the writing window is day 2 and 3.
The tests need to be taken in a specific order. Individual students are not permitted to sit the online tests after Day 9.
Test | Scheduling requirements | Duration | Test description |
Writing | Year 3 students do a paper-based writing test (on day 1 only) Year 5 must start on day 1 (schools must prioritise completion of writing across days 1 and 2 only) | Year 3: 40 minutes Year 5: 42 minutes | Students are provided with a ‘writing stimulus’ (sometimes called a ‘prompt’ – an idea or topic) and asked to write a response in a particular genre (narrative or persuasive writing) |
Reading | To ensure online schools are able to complete NAPLAN tests within the nine-day testing window | Year 3: 45 minutes Year 5: 50 minutes | Students read a range of informative, imaginative and persuasive texts and then answer related questions |
Conventions of language | To be completed after the reading test | Year 3: 45 minutes Year 5: 45 minutes | This test assesses spelling, grammar and punctuation |
Numeracy | To be completed after the conventions of language test | Year 3: 45 minutes Year 5: 50 minutes | This test assesses number and algebra, measurement and geometry, and statistics and probability |
There is an information flyer below to provide more information for you. When a test schedule has been confirmed this will be published for our parents and community to see when their child will be engaging in these tests.
If you choose to withdraw your child from the testing program this must be done in consultation with the school. Withdrawals are intended to address issues such as religious beliefs and/or philosophical objections. The principal must obtain a signed parent/carer consent form for student. The privacy information for parents is attached in the PDF below.
