Principal's Message
What Wonderful Work – Reading at Cranbrook
Reading is of the utmost importance at Cranbrook and we regularly set targets to improve our student outcomes. Our Teachers are working hard every day to make a difference in your child’s reading abilities. One of the ways we improve reading is providing extra support for those students who need it, through our Reading Intervention Program.
The level of results below are usually only achieved if parents are reading with their child EVERY night.
34 children participated in the first round of intervention during the first 5 weeks of school.
· 93% of these students improved in their reading results.
· The average level of improvement was 4 months in 5 weeks.
This is another great example of the standard of excellence our Teachers, Teacher Aides and Cohort Leaders work to achieve for our students. Congratulations.
School Sores
There has been a confirmed case of School Sores (Impetigo) in our school this week. Please be aware and inspect your child’s skin over the next week or so.
This condition is highly contagious and students with School Sores (Impetigo) must be excluded from school until 24 hours of appropriate antibiotics have been completed.
It is also recommended by Queensland Health that parents should, ‘cover sores on exposed areas with a waterproof dressing until sores are dry, and encourage handwashing.’

Interschool Swimming Carnival
It was with great pride that we watched our Cranbrook Swim Team compete and win at the "D" Schools Interschool Swimming Carnival on Monday. There were some great individual performances and as a team they supported each other in defeat and victory, which was a great attribute displayed by our swim team.
Congratulations goes to Ms Von Wald as well as the competitors who have spent many early mornings before school preparing for this event. A bonus of winning the event is that Cranbrook will now be promoted to the "C" Schools Carnival in 2022.

Principal
Positive Behaviour for Learning
Congratulations to Zion, in Year 1 who is this week's PBL Assembly Draw Winner.
National Day of Action Against Bullying
This Friday is the National Day of Action against Bullying.
These messages are sent loud and clear every day at Cranbrook through our PBL lessons- particularly through being an up-stander and the high five strategy.
This year's theme is "Take Action Together", which aims to elevate student voice and empower young Australians to join the conversation.
On Friday, our teachers will spread this message throughout the day to encourage our students to take action to prevent and stand against bullying and to look at ways that we can work together to create a positive relationships and a supportive learning environment.

Movie Club - Green Screen
The students in the Movie Club have been busy producing photos and movies using green screen technology. Below are some of the creations recently made by two students, shrinking themselves onto food and they came to the discovery that anything green can produce the same effects with the green screen app...even the bottom of a shoe.

What's On in Year 6
In week 7, Ms Bartels organised a phone link up with her brother-in-law, Duncan to share his knowledge of COVID as a paramedic in the UK. This ‘incursion’ ties in with our Unit 2 - “Will I survive the next pandemic?”
Year 6 students listened to Duncan talk about the impact of COVID on another country as part of their Unit 1 - Pandemic unit. Students have used this information to write a diary of their experiences in COVID times and the impact on other countries.
Due to the time difference and delays with sound during the link up, students also emailed him questions to which Duncan responded in great detail and with photos. This was a great experience for our Yr 6 students.
Julie Norman
Year 6 Teacher
An excerpt from our Interview...
My name is Duncan Webley and I am a Paramedic with the London Ambulance Service. I grew up in Townsville and after studying at university for 3 years in NSW, moved with my wife to London to work as a Paramedic. I have worked on the frontline throughout the Covid-19 Pandemic and have witnessed the highs and lows of humanity whilst providing emergency care to the people of London.
Q1. Has it been hard being a paramedic during Covid-19?
Yes, it has sometimes. In London, we started seeing patients with Covid-19 in February 2020 and at the time there was a lot of fear of the unknown - no one had any idea how bad the virus was, how it was transmitted or what the symptoms were. This fear and uncertainty led to us wearing a lot of protective equipment to attempt to protect us from catching the virus. After March 2020, a lot of people in the UK were getting very sick from the virus and we attended a lot of patients who were severely unwell - of these patients we took most of them to hospital and many of them died.
Paluma Environmental Centre Incursion
Prep Incursion
On Tuesday 16th March, Prep had a visit from the Paluma Environmental Education Centre. Alison and Dan talked about living things and what they need to survive: food, water, air, sunlight and shelter. Dog visited and helped students to decide what he needed and what he didn’t need.
Alison talked about what scientists do and called on some helpers to assist her with problems Dog was having. Dan read “The Tiny Seed” and talked about what plants need to help them grow. The Preps had a wonderful time consolidating their knowledge about living things!

Prep Teacher
Year 1 Incursion
The grade 1 cohort has been learning about living things, how they respond to habitats and how the habitat provides certain needs.
We were fortunate to have Dan and Alison from Paluma Environmental Centre further the grade ones' knowledge about our science unit.
We were even joined by a singing frog who performed the song, WE LOVE FROGS!

Absence For More Than 10 Days
What is an exemption and why do I need it?
Every parent of a child of compulsory school age has a legal obligation to ensure their child is enrolled and attending school. Parents can apply for an exemption from this obligation when their child cannot attend or it would be unreasonable in all the circumstances for their child to attend school for a period of more than 10 consecutive school days.
Situations where an application for an exemption may be made include:
- Illness
- Family reasons
- Cultural or religious reasons
If your child is exempt from compulsory schooling, you are excused from your obligation in relation to compulsory schooling.
The school principal is not responsible for providing an educational program for your child, however they may provide advice on other educational options available. Decisions about exemptions for up to one school year are made by the principal and decisions about exemptions for more than one school year are made by the relevant Regional Director of the Department of Education, Training and Employment, responsible for the supervision of the school your child attends.
