Cranbrook Newsletter - Term 2 Week 8 2021
Principal's Message
Building Works
The P&C Priority Project of an under covered walkway and waiting area at the front of the school is currently out to tender and this work should begin in August.
The security fence (the big black fence) tender has been awarded and this work will begin towards the end of July.
The Year 4 to 6 playground extension and flying fox installation will begin in August.
Staffing Changes
4/5D – Mrs O’Brien will be accessing maternity leave during Semester 2. This position is yet to be filled and an announcement is expected to be made next week prior to students leaving in week 10 to go on camp.
Reporting
Report Cards will be distributed on Friday, 23rd July and no parent teacher interviews will be offered as part of this process. However you are reminded that you can request a meeting with your child’s teacher any day about any concern that you have. The teachers' email addresses are also included in the report cards for you to contact them electronically if this is preferred.
The school website has an article that explains reporting even further to parents. It spells out for parents (and students) what the present A-E reporting scale indicates on a child’s report card. For parents of my generation, we would be familiar with grading based on a bell curve of student achievement with the ‘top’ kids getting an A and the majority a C.
Today, students are assessed against standardised criteria. It is possible within any given grade that there might not be any 'A's awarded or alternatively there could be very few Cs.
School Staff Car Park
Parents are reminded that the school staff car park is not a safe place for children to be delivered or collected from school or outside school hours activities*. Please observe school signage and drive carefully around our school.
*Parents delivering students to outside school hours activities are welcome to use the car park prior to 7:30 am and after 4:00 pm when staff traffic is reduced.
Parents are also reminded that if students are not using the Crossing Supervisors, then you should cross the road with your child. We are currently observing many parents putting their child's life at risk, because they will not get out of their cars to ensure their child's safety.
Lost Property
Have you lost something at school and still can't find it? We have a number of watches, wallets, jewellery pieces, keys etc that have been handed into the office and never claimed. Please ask at Admin if you think they might belong to you.
School Cleaners' Day
This Friday, 11th June is School Cleaners Day. The COVID pandemic has highlighted the importance of our school cleaners within our school environment. All of our staff and students acknowledge the hardworking efforts of our school cleaners in keeping our school environment healthy and hygienic.
Please say a big thank you to our cleaners to let them know their work is greatly appreciated and to show them how valued they are.

What's On in Year 1
During term 2 for Mathematics, the students of 1B are learning about analogue and digital times. They have explored reading the time and writing matching digital and analogue times. The 1B students have added work to the class Learning Journey and also created their own analogue clocks which are displayed in the classroom.
Year 1 students have also been working on measuring capacities of different size containers. This lesson we had fun in the sandpit comparing how much sand each container held!

Regular, punctual attendance at school is expected of all students. Students should be present at school ready to prepare for the day's learning by 8:30am.
Late Arrivals
Students arriving after 8:50am must report to the office to receive a lateslip. If a student is late, a letter of explanation from the student's parent/guardian must be presented to the office staff on arrival.
Absence
If a student is absent and the parent/guardian has not notified the school, they will receive an automated text message by 10am that day.
Parents will receive a text message informing them that their child is absent. If you receive one of these text messages, please contact the school to explain the reason for your child’s absence.
A working mobile number should be registered with the school, if available.
Please remember that absence is only marked for the days specified by the parents. If you ring up on a Monday informing that your child is sick and they remain away from school for the following 2 days because they are sick you need to inform us that this was the reason for their absence. Absence For More Than 10 Days
What is an exemption and why do I need it?
Every parent of a child of compulsory school age has a legal obligation to ensure their child is enrolled and attending school. Parents can apply for an exemption from this obligation when their child cannot attend or it would be unreasonable in all the circumstances for their child to attend school for a period of more than 10 consecutive school days.
Situations where an application for an exemption may be made include:
- Illness
- Family reasons
- Cultural or religious reasons
If your child is exempt from compulsory schooling, you are excused from your obligation in relation to compulsory schooling.
The school principal is not responsible for providing an educational program for your child, however they may provide advice on other educational options available. Decisions about exemptions for up to one school year are made by the principal and decisions about exemptions for more than one school year are made by the relevant Regional Director of the Department of Education, Training and Employment, responsible for the supervision of the school your child attends.
