Principal's Message
Extra Curricula Activities
It is expected that some extra curricula activities will begin in Week 2 Term 3 and that a program of activites will be forwarded to students in week 1 of Term 3.
Year 4/5D New Class Teacher
Due to Mrs O’Brien taking extended maternity leave from the end of Term 2, we have recently been able to source the services of Ms Shannon Morgan and she has been appointed to the 4/5D class for the remainder the year.
Ms Morgan is an excellent and experienced teacher who has been working at schools in the Northern Territory in recent years. Ms Morgan’s most recent position of Deputy Principal and prior position of Head of Curriculum, means she comes to our school highly accomplished and experienced. Ms Morgan has high expectations of students and has achieved excellent outcomes with students at previous schools in the past.
Ms Shannon Morgan and Ms Amy Kennett, the Year 5 Cohort Leader, will co-teach the Year 4/5D class for the remainder of the year.
Congratulations to Emily in Year 1 who was the recipient of the "Principal's Award" this week on assembly for keeping Cranbrook School tidy.
Keep a watch on our school these holidays
Parents and students can help take care of our school by reporting any suspicious after-hours activity to School Watch on 13 17 88. By keeping an eye out we can work together to create a safer school community and help to reduce vandalism, theft and arson in our school.
If you see something suspicious, please don't intervene. Call the School Watch number and let the local police or State Government Protective Security Service deal with the matter.

Principal
Positive Behaviour For Learning
Congratulations to Kenzie in Year 3, who is this week's PBL Assembly Draw Winner
Athletics Carnival
We had a fantastic attendance this year at our Athletics Carnival!
Thank you to all the parents who came to support and cheer! Balara was this year's winning House earning a total of 1771 points. Following a close second was Wallaringa, Cooradilla took third place and Kalyara came in fourth.
Thank you also to the kindergarten kids that came along to join in some of the activities.
This year, the 60m, 80m and 100m sprints were set up into an A and B Division in their age groups, based on their timed results during PE. The Division A sprinters were the finalists (ribbon holders) and the winner in these races were announced as the age champion and received a medal on parade. Students who ran in Division B were awarded points for their houses according to their placing in their race.
Our sprints system was set up similarly to the Interschool Sports Carnivals allowing us to plan a more efficient Carnival day without having the children run multiple heats in each age group. The 2013 High Jump event for the 2013 age group, was also successfully conducted on Thursday due to the large numbers of student participants.
I would also like to congratulate all of our students for their excellent sportsmanship on the day and their willingness to "give it a go" and have some fun!

Readers' Cup Competition
On Thursday 10th June two teams of enthusiastic Year 5 and 6 Cranbrook readers competed in the North Qld Readers’ Cup competition. The competition required students to read 5 selected books and then compete with other school teams to answer quiz questions from the books. The Readers’ Cup competition challenges students to read widely, work collaboratively in a team and to analyse the content of the given texts. It allows students to compete at a regional and state level similar to sporting competitions and to meet other students with an equal passion for books.
Congratulations to our two Cranbrook teams:
- The Lords of Reading: Violet, Charlotte, Abagail and Lyddell who placed 21st
- The Book Thieves: Boyd, Amealue and Grace who placed 23rd
Thank you to the students who showed a sensational passion for reading, awesome team work and were always enthusiastic, positive and committed! A special thank you to the parents for supporting your children.
Come and check out the Animal Book Display.
We have a huge array of Animal Books in the Resource Centre! Come along to our Library and borrow one today. If you can't find what you are looking for don't forget to ask Mrs Shepherd or Mrs Davey for help.

Emails were sent out on Monday listing overdue books. Please return any overdue books to the library as soon as possible. If you have lost or damaged the books, they can be paid for through the QKR app.
Payment for Lost Library Book: $10
Payment for Lost Home Reader: $5
Paluma STEM Camp
From Wednesday to Friday in Week 8, five students and I set off to Paluma for a STEM camp.
We were lucky to have specialists STEM Punks to teach and show us some great things that can be done with Lego EV3s , Merge cubes and micro bits.
The Principal of Paluma EEC took us for a night walk in the rainforest, bird watching, played games and taught the boys the dance of the Victorian Rifle Bird.
It was VERY cold at Paluma, but we were lucky to have a fire place in the classroom.
I was very proud of how the boys interacted with the other group of students from Ingham and I was also impressed with how much the boys loved the clearing and washing up (it was probably the fun machine) each mealtime.

Short Story Festival
The Adventure of Six Puppet Show
Some of our Year 4 students have been involved in an extension program and they have been compacting the learning time for English by an hour each week to work on a collaborative student chosen project.
These students chose to create and perform a puppet show, "The Adventure of Six".
Together they planned out what they needed to do over the allocated weeks which included writing the script, making the set and puppets, advertising the performance and of course performing to a group of students during their lunch break.
Congratulations to Margaret, Charlie, Emily, Alice, Chlesea, Jane, Chloe, Eli, Fabian and Liam for their efforts and accomplishments on their project!

As winter is here, we would appreciate donations of cheese to make warm toasties for the children.
You are welcome to drop your donations to the Breakfast Club counter in the mornings before 8:30am or at the office.

Absence For More Than 10 Days
What is an exemption and why do I need it?
Every parent of a child of compulsory school age has a legal obligation to ensure their child is enrolled and attending school. Parents can apply for an exemption from this obligation when their child cannot attend or it would be unreasonable in all the circumstances for their child to attend school for a period of more than 10 consecutive school days.
Situations where an application for an exemption may be made include:
- Illness
- Family reasons
- Cultural or religious reasons
If your child is exempt from compulsory schooling, you are excused from your obligation in relation to compulsory schooling.
The school principal is not responsible for providing an educational program for your child, however they may provide advice on other educational options available. Decisions about exemptions for up to one school year are made by the principal and decisions about exemptions for more than one school year are made by the relevant Regional Director of the Department of Education, Training and Employment, responsible for the supervision of the school your child attends.
