Cranbrook Newsletter - Term 2 Week 10 2021

School Annual Report
Each year, all schools in Queenlsand publish a report on their school's progress and achievements for the previous year. The report is a version of our review and reflection which is completed at the end of each academic year (which is the same for all schools).
School annual reports are a key governance and communication mechanism for schools and their communities to help express and celebrate the focus, activities and outcomes of schooling each year. Our 2020 school annual report is available to view on our school website.
Athletics Carnival
Congratulations to Balara who won the Athletics carnival last week. Well done to Mrs Von Wald for organising a considerable and complex event. A big thank you to parents who were respectful in maintaining your distance on the mounds. Well done to the P&C for organising food and drinks and for allowing parents use the OHSC facility toilets.
Breakfast Club
Our school Breakfast Club is very popular every morning. A big shout out and thanks to those parents who regularly donate items so that the children have an opportunity to have a healthy start before their learning each day. This initiative is only possible with the support from our major supporter, Food Relief North Queensland, various charities, church groups and our wonderful Cranbrook parents.
Keep a watch on our school these holidays
Please help to take care of our school by reporting any suspicious after-hours activity to School Watch on 13 17 88. By keeping an eye out we can work together to create a safer school community and help to reduce vandalism, theft and arson in our school.
If you see something suspicious, please don't intervene. Call the School Watch number and let the local police or State Government Protective Security Service deal with the matter.
I wish you all a safe mid-year break and look forward to seeing you all next term. Term 3 commences Monday 12th July.
Jeff Capell,
Principal

Thank you to Kirwan High for making this happen! And congratulations to all Cranbrook students who were a wonderful and enthusiastic audience!
SHEP - State Honors Ensemble Program
Last weekend from the 18th-20th of June, seven Year 5 and 6 students from Cranbrook participated in the 2021 Townsville State Honours Ensemble Program.
Students enjoyed singing and making music all weekend with a range of experts from SHEP conservatorium Griffith University and other schools around the region. Students demonstrated their learning and ability in a final culminating performance on the Sunday.
Conductors and staff in attendance commented positively on the high level of musical and social accomplishmens of our students. We are very proud of the students' admirable representation of our school including their commitment, achievement and positive attitudes.

Keep on reading!
Over the school holidays encourage your children to read, using the SORA ebooks. All Cranbrook students have access to this amazing collection of books. Access SORA on your computer, tablets or phones. A great way to read and not lose books over the holidays.
Don't forget to add the books your child reads over the school holidays to the Premier's Reading Challenge log sheet.

Absence For More Than 10 Days
What is an exemption and why do I need it?
Every parent of a child of compulsory school age has a legal obligation to ensure their child is enrolled and attending school. Parents can apply for an exemption from this obligation when their child cannot attend or it would be unreasonable in all the circumstances for their child to attend school for a period of more than 10 consecutive school days.
Situations where an application for an exemption may be made include:
- Illness
- Family reasons
- Cultural or religious reasons
If your child is exempt from compulsory schooling, you are excused from your obligation in relation to compulsory schooling.
The school principal is not responsible for providing an educational program for your child, however they may provide advice on other educational options available. Decisions about exemptions for up to one school year are made by the principal and decisions about exemptions for more than one school year are made by the relevant Regional Director of the Department of Education, Training and Employment, responsible for the supervision of the school your child attends.
