Cranbrook Newsletter Term 4 - Week 1 2021
Principal's Message
Welcome Back
We hope you all had an enjoyable holiday and your children have had a smooth transition back into learning.
There are some staff changes for this term that you should be aware of:
Prep A: Mrs Suringa will be taking leave from week 2 onwards and Mrs McLean will be moving from Inclusion to take the class.
Inclusion: Mrs Lindgren will be backfilling Mrs McLean in Inclusion for the remainder of the year.
Teacher Librarian: Mrs Shepherd is on leave for the remainder of the year and Mrs Hoole will be covering this leave.
Positive Behaviour for Learning
Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) is an evidence-based whole school framework that actively promotes positive behaviour. It is based on research and is designed to support all students to achieve their best academically, socially and behaviourally. It enables students to develop a clear understanding of required expectations, become responsible for their own behaviour and work together to create a positive productive and harmonious learning community.
Our expectations have not changed and our focus is still on being SAFE, being RESPONSIBLE and being RESPECTFUL; however our means of addressing these expectations will change as we will explicitly teach and reinforce expected behaviours through focussed lessons.
Prep is compulsory 2022
The Queensland Parliament recently made important changes to the Education (General Provisions) Act 2006. From next year, it will be compulsory for all Queensland children to undertake the Preparatory (Prep) Year, prior to entering Year 1. The legislation identifies specific exceptions that can be determined by principals on a case-by-case basis. We have seen such positive learning outcomes since the introduction of Prep and I am pleased all children will now enjoy this important start to their learning
Transition to School Resources to Support Your Child
There are many ways a parent or carer can help their child transition from home or kindy to school.
Take a look at the short video from the Department of Education, "Weir Kindergarten" to find out how transition statements are supporting a great start to school; which is one of several videos on their website designed to assist families, early education and care services and schools to support positive transitions to Prep.
Dismissal of Prep Students
From Monday 5 October 2021 at 3.00pm the children will be dismissed from their classrooms and go to a meeting place predetermined with the parent/caregiver.

School Uniform Policy
Cranbrook is a uniform wearing school. All students should come dressed each day in the full school uniform:
- Shorts/Skorts
- Polo – school and sports
- HAT (no other hats should be worn and students asked to place non-school hats in their bags
It is important to recognise that our school uniform policy is a vital part of the education strategy of our school. At Cranbrook, we value, neat, tidy, dignified personal presentation which will prepare students for their future, enhance their leadership skills and ensures that they take pride in being part of a team.
Cranbrook School Uniforms can be purchased from the P & C Uniform Shop located at the back of the Hall.
Term 4 Extra Curricular Activities
During Term 4, Cranbrook State School will again offer a wide range of Extra-Curricular Activities for students to participate in due to the generosity and enthusiasm of the teachers who volunteer their own time. Some parents may have noticed that the Piano and Guitar email offers to participate in these extra curricula activities have already been emailed. The Term 4 Activity Schedule (PDF) is available for viewing below.
Please discuss with your child about what opportunities they may wish to be involved in and remind them about their attendance on a weekly basis.
Lunches
Over the last couple of days there has been a constant stream of children coming to the office saying they have not had enough to eat.
Please ensure that your children have enough food in their lunches to last them for both eating breaks. Perhaps an extra sandwich or piece of fruit might help.
PLEASE NOTE THAT THE COLDROOM BOXES WILL BE PLACED ON THE BENCHES IN THE UNDERCOVERED AREAS FROM NEXT WEEK.
Students can place their lunches in these boxes in the mornings, if they would like their lunches refrigerated for the 1st Break. Teachers will allocate students to collect the large tubs and they will be taken to the eating areas. If you have any questions please contact your teacher or see me on morning duty between 8.00am and 8.30am. Please NOTE lunches are put into the cold room at 8.50am (if you arrive late, you miss out) and they are not accessed again until 1st break (take your healthy snack out). This excellent service is only available due to our wonderful P&C who installed the cold room for the benefit of all students.

Parents will receive a text message informing them that their child is absent. If you receive one of these text messages, please contact the school to explain the reason for your child’s absence.
A working mobile number should be registered with the school, if available.
Please remember that absence is only marked for the days specified by the parents. If you ring up on a Monday informing that your child is sick and they remain away from school for the following 2 days because they are sick you need to inform us that this was the reason for their absence. Absence For More Than 10 Days
What is an exemption and why do I need it?
Every parent of a child of compulsory school age has a legal obligation to ensure their child is enrolled and attending school. Parents can apply for an exemption from this obligation when their child cannot attend or it would be unreasonable in all the circumstances for their child to attend school for a period of more than 10 consecutive school days.
Situations where an application for an exemption may be made include:
- Illness
- Family reasons
- Cultural or religious reasons
If your child is exempt from compulsory schooling, you are excused from your obligation in relation to compulsory schooling.
The school principal is not responsible for providing an educational program for your child, however they may provide advice on other educational options available. Decisions about exemptions for up to one school year are made by the principal and decisions about exemptions for more than one school year are made by the relevant Regional Director of the Department of Education, Training and Employment, responsible for the supervision of the school your child attends.
