Principal's Message
Prep Transition
A full suite of resources and information are available on the school website to parents who are looking to enrol their child at Cranbrook State School for 2022.
You are also reminded to keep an eye on the upcoming events section to ensure you don’t miss any opportunities to prepare for 2021.
Prep Transition has started THIS WEEK.
Supporting Positive Transitions to Prep
There are many ways a parent or carer can help their child transition from home or kindy to school.
Take a look at the short video from the Department of Education, "Perigian Springs State School". This video gives some insights that transition statements provide to ensure that 'learning suits the learner'. This video is one of several videos on the Early Childhood Education and Care website, designed to assist families, early education and care services and schools to support positive transitions to Prep.
2022 Enrolment Email
This week you would have received an email survey regarding your enrolment intentions for 2022. Please advise us ASAP if your child will not be attending Cranbrook during 2022 as we are busily developing new class lists for 2022 that will be released to parents during week 9.
Delayed Entry to Prep for children who have not previously been enrolled in Prep
Parents may delay their child's entry to Prep (and subsequently Year 1) if they feel that the child is not ready to start school. For example, the child is still developing their social and emotional skills. The child can then commence Prep when they are of compulsory school age (6 years and 6 months).
No formal documentation, assessment or approval is required for delayed entry to Prep. Principals do not make decisions on delaying a child's entry to Prep. While some parents may choose to discuss their decision to delay entry with the Principal, it is not necessary for them to do so.
It is strongly recommended that students enrol, complete the transition program and trial Prep for the first 20 days. In some cases, as parents we may underestimate the resilience and adaptive capacity of our children. To be fully informed, let your child have a go, they never cease to amaze us.

"Make a Mark" Townsville City Galleries Workshop
4/5D engaged in a workshop with artist Erin Ricardo earlier this week, during their Arts lesson.
The students created print feathers which will be used to create a large pair of wings with contributions from different Townsville schools.
Our Arts Teachers will let us know where they will displayed so watch this space!
JCU Marine Biologist Incursion
On Wednesday, Savannah and Patrick from JCU, visited our Year 5 Cohort.
Savannah is a Marine Biologist at JCU and studies coral and sea turtles. She explained the role of Marine Biologists and how they study the reef in a hope to understand and protect it. The students impressed Savannah with their knowledge of coral and the Great Barrier Reef ecosystems as well as the effects of climate change on them. The students enjoyed asking many questions and learning even more!
Minds were blown with the incredible diversity of the majestic creatures of our reef.
- The thing that blew my mind is that Leatherback Turtles can become the size of a car because they grow so quickly! - Jack
- The thing that blew my mind is that the crown of thorns starfish releases thousands of babies when they are disturbed and angry. – Paarth
- The thing that blew my mind is that turtles can travel across the whole world! – Clark
- The thing that blew my mind is that sea cucumbers spit out their insides when they are in danger and Aboriginal people can use their insides as shoes to walk on the reef. – Deakyn
- The thing that blew my mind is that plankton live in coral and leave if it gets too hot. - Tyler

Absence For More Than 10 Days
What is an exemption and why do I need it?
Every parent of a child of compulsory school age has a legal obligation to ensure their child is enrolled and attending school. Parents can apply for an exemption from this obligation when their child cannot attend or it would be unreasonable in all the circumstances for their child to attend school for a period of more than 10 consecutive school days.
Situations where an application for an exemption may be made include:
- Illness
- Family reasons
- Cultural or religious reasons
If your child is exempt from compulsory schooling, you are excused from your obligation in relation to compulsory schooling.
The school principal is not responsible for providing an educational program for your child, however they may provide advice on other educational options available. Decisions about exemptions for up to one school year are made by the principal and decisions about exemptions for more than one school year are made by the relevant Regional Director of the Department of Education, Training and Employment, responsible for the supervision of the school your child attends.
