Principal's Message
Welcome to our Week 8 newsletter.
QKR!
Don’t forget Cranbrook State School provides our parents with another option to increase the convenience around school finances. Parents are able to pay all school payments (SRS, Camps, Excursions, Guitar Lessons, Swimming Lessons, Sports, Performances) and all TUCKSHOP ORDERS online. Please feel free to watch the links to see how it works.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=A1wpTiL4fQk
QSchools App
Our school is committed to keeping all parents fully informed on up and coming events and opportunities to become involved in your child’s education. The QSchools app will assist you to stay up to date on all of our school’s events. To download the QSchoolsApp and receive the latest news on our school, simply go to the iTunes store or Google Play and search for ‘QSchools’ or use the following link for more information:

School Student Resource and Stationery Scheme 2022
Congratulations to those parents (98.5% of families) who joined the scheme this year. For those parents who decided on supplying their own materials, you are reminded that all items need to be supplied by the end of this week, otherwise you will be invoiced for the 2022 SRS amount of $120 to access the school resources. Please feel free to contact our Business Manager, Deana Edwards to discuss this further.
Electronic Devices
Electronic Devices (other than approved laptops) MUST be handed in when students arrive at school NOT at 8.30.
The staff carpark is for staff
Please do not park in there when picking up your children after school. Parents are reminded that the school staff car park is not a safe place for children to be delivered or collected from school.
A reminder also, that dropping students off on or near the pedestrian crossing on Bergin Road is also very unsafe as it endangers the lives of children using the crossing correctly.
School Hats
Some students have reported their hats have gone missing. The chances of their hat going missing could be greatly reduced by writing the child's name (or Initials/symbol) on the OUTSIDE brim instead of on the inside. A supervising staff member can then easily see if the hat belongs to that student. Staff, especially teachers, do not have the time to do hat inspections as we are busy teaching your child the Australian Curriculum as well as catering for their physical, social and emotional needs. Remember - No Cranbrook Hat = No Play.
A school initiative has begun to place the students initials on the outside brim of the hat and their first name on the inside brim of the hat using iron on vinyl transfers as a way of reducing the burden of cost to parents for lost hats.
Positive Behaviour for Learning
Congratulations to those students who were invited to their class celebration for positive behaviour. Every student who received 15 SNAPS (our school mascot (SNAPPY THE CROCODILE) link to positivity) in the first five weeks were invited to the celebration. As a school we were pleased that 100% of students attended, with the exception of those students who were either suspended (behaviour so serious that it required their right to education to be suspended due to extreme misbehaviour, extreme disobedience or conduct that effected the school operations and/or the safety of students) or on an EXIT so the rights or teachers to teach and the students to learn could be re-established.
For those who are unaware of what PBL:
Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) is an educational process that brings together the whole-school community to contribute to developing a positive, safe and supportive learning culture. The PBL framework assists schools to improve social, emotional, behavioural and academic outcomes for children and young people.
PBL is a process, not a program.
When PBL is implemented well, teachers and students have more time to focus on relationships and classroom instruction.
Students and staff benefit from:
- reduced problem behaviour
- increased time focused on instruction
- improved social-emotional wellbeing
- positive and respectful relationships among students and staff
- better support for teachers to teach, model and respond effectively to student needs
- a predictable learning environment where staff and students know what is expected to deliver effective practices that can be sustained over time.
What Wonderful Work – Reading at Cranbrook
Reading is of the utmost importance at Cranbrook and we regularly set targets to improve our student outcomes. Our Teachers are working hard every day to make a difference in your child’s reading abilities. One of the ways we improve reading is providing extra support for those students who need it, through our Reading Intervention Program.
The level of results below are usually only achieved if parents are reading with their child EVERY night.
Interschool Swimming Carnival
It was with great pride that we watched our Cranbrook Swim Team compete and win at the "C" Schools Interschool Swimming Carnival on Tuesday. There were some great individual performances and as a team they supported each other in defeat and victory, which was a great attribute displayed by our swim team.
Congratulations goes to Mrs Woods as well as the competitors who have spent many early mornings before school preparing for this event.
School Sores
There has been a confirmed case of School Sores (Impetigo) in our school this week. Please be aware and inspect your child’s skin over the next week or so.
This condition is highly contagious and students with School Sores (Impetigo) must be excluded from school until 24 hours of appropriate antibiotics have been completed.
It is also recommended by Queensland Health that parents should, ‘cover sores on exposed areas with a waterproof dressing until sores are dry, and encourage handwashing.’
For more guidance, please take a look at the poster below from Queensland Health.
Enjoy your weekend!

Coming up....
This coming Thursday, we will be having our first disco for 2022!
Don't forget: The disco is run by the Student Council and therefore needs both student leaders to attend and help and also a few parents too - please! Thank you.
In Week 10 - our last week of term, on Thursday, 31 March, we will be holding our Colour Fun Run! Over the last few years, we have put a twist on our cross country event and made it a little more exciting for everyone. To participate in this fundraiser, a colour pack must be purchased. The cost is $15 and included is a white shirt, squirts of colour along the course, your sports house coloured wristband and your sports house coloured sunglasses. Payments can be made via Qkr! or by cash directly to the office. Packs will be handed out to the students the day before, on Wednesday, 30 March. If you choose for your child not to participate, they will still run, but staff will not squirt them with colour. SOBS Permission notes will be sent out via email - it is very important to complete these permissions, especially as some of our students will need to run outside the school grounds. If we don't have permission, your child will not be able to participate with their year level - an alternative course will be designated. More details to come next week.
Getting back to normal....
It was so great to finally be able to all be together for parade! For our leaders, it was the very first time they had the chance to run a parade and they all did a fabulous job.
Check us out!
Remember, you are always welcome at our parades.
Every Day Counts - Attendance
Regular, punctual attendance at school is expected of all students. Students should be present at school ready to prepare for the day's learning by 8:30am.
Late Arrivals
Students arriving after 8:50am must report to the office to receive a lateslip. If a student is late, a letter of explanation from the student's parent/guardian must be presented to the office staff on arrival.
Absence
If a student is absent and the parent/guardian has not notified the school, they will receive an automated text message by 10am that day.
Parents will receive a text message informing them that their child is absent. If you receive one of these text messages, please contact the school to explain the reason for your child’s absence.
A working mobile number should be registered with the school, if available.
Please remember that absence is only marked for the days specified by the parents. If you ring up on a Monday informing that your child is sick and they remain away from school for the following 2 days because they are sick you need to inform us that this was the reason for their absence. You can inform us after the absence via a message directly to the teacher or by contacting our absence hotline or email.
If your child is absent, please leave a message detailing:
- Child's name
- Class
- Reason for absence
- Dates or duration of absence
Absence Hotline - 4726 1260
Absence Email - absences@cranbrookss.eq.edu.au
Absence For More Than 10 Days
What is an exemption and why do I need it?
Every parent of a child of compulsory school age has a legal obligation to ensure their child is enrolled and attending school. Parents can apply for an exemption from this obligation when their child cannot attend or it would be unreasonable in all the circumstances for their child to attend school for a period of more than 10 consecutive school days.
Situations where an application for an exemption may be made include:
- Illness
- Family reasons
- Cultural or religious reasons
If your child is exempt from compulsory schooling, you are excused from your obligation in relation to compulsory schooling.
The school principal is not responsible for providing an educational program for your child, however they may provide advice on other educational options available. Decisions about exemptions for up to one school year are made by the principal and decisions about exemptions for more than one school year are made by the relevant Regional Director of the Department of Education, Training and Employment, responsible for the supervision of the school your child attends.
Attendance Award - Week 6 and 7
Positive Behaviour for Learning
A big congratulations to our weekly PBL snappy winners:
Week 7 was Hunter.
Week 8 was Skye.
Next week (Week 9), our PBL lesson will be focused on Respect.
We will be learning how to include everyone.
In Week 8, we will be focusing on being responsible and
accepting responsibility.
Snappy Celebration
Last Friday we held our mid-term Snappy Celebration. Students who had earned 15 classroom snaps, were treated to an afternoon of fun. As it was still one of those very hot days, classroom activities in the airconditioning, were a big favourite.
Our next big celebration will be on the last day of school, for those students who have earned 30 classroom snaps and no majors for Term 1.
Investiture Ceremony
On Thursday, we held our very special parade, to acknowledge our 2022 School Leaders. Thank you to all those who came to support our students. It was so lovely to see you there. Thank you to the community members who gave up their time to present the students with their badges. We really appreciated it.
Congratulations to all of our elected captains and councillors. We wish you all the best for your leadership this year. Enjoy!
Here are a few pictures of the event. There were more taken and if you would like any photos that your student is in, please send a labelled USB stick to your child's teacher and we will get that done for you.
What's On in Year 5

Spotlight on.....
Chappy Danielle!
Let's get to know her a little more......
What school did you go to? I went to primary schools in Victoria and the Gold Coast and went to high school in Bowen. I moved to Townsville to study at James Cook University when I turned 19.
What was one of your favourite things to do as a child? One of my favourite things to do as a child was to go on adventures with my family. My parents would always be taking us to the beach, on bush walks, fishing, and camping. I loved spending time with my family and doing lots of fun outdoor activities together.
What did you want to be growing up? When I was growing up, I always wanted to be a singer and make music. I have always loved music so much and still do! I may not be a professional singer today, but I enjoy writing and playing music with my friends. I also love to play guitar and sing in my Church band. Music will always be important to me.
When did you decide to be a chaplain and why? I became a chaplain at the end of 2019. I have a degree in social work and wasn’t sure where I wanted to work. I have a very close friend who is also a chaplain, and she would always tell me how much I would suit the role. I decided to do a work experience day with her at her school one week, and I really loved it. I am very passionate about the wellbeing of young people, and I loved the idea that I could work alongside children in a school environment and empower and encourage them to be the best version of themselves.
What do you love about your job? What I love about my job is working with so many amazing young people. I love being able to get to know students and provide them with a safe place to access support. It is such a privilege to journey and walk alongside them and watch them grow and thrive. I also love being part of the wider school community and working along side the amazing staff. It is so nice to see how a school can come together for their community and to see what we can achieve when we work together. I am really looking forward to seeing what this year will bring for Cranbrook!
Lost glasses
We have a bunch of glasses waiting to be claimed at the office.
Please check if they belong to one of your children. Thank you!
