Before School Supervision
Numerous students are leaving the school grounds after they have been dropped off!
Thanks to our amazing P&C, students in the morning have a sheltered space to congregate until the school gates open at 8.00am, however, during this time there is NO SUPERVISION and as such students are left to their own devices.
When students are left to their own devices they can sometimes make poor choices regarding being SAFE, RESPONSIBLE and RESPECTFUL. Some concerns that have already been experienced by parents are:
- Students leaving the school grounds and walking to another address: KFC, Servo, Peers homes
- Students injuring themselves due to unsafe actions: running, jumping, climbing
- Students injuring other students due to unsafe actions: hitting, kicking, pushing
- High school students who have dropped their siblings off remaining in the sheltered area and interacting with students.
As a school, we will follow up and behaviours that breach the Cranbrook State School Student Code of Conduct if parents or students report any incidences once they enter the school grounds. Individual students may be restricted in their access to the school grounds when no supervision is available if ongoing and repeated behaviours place themselves or others at risk.
The Cranbrook Outside Hours School Care provides supervision from 6.00am and provide clients with a safe and enriched space both before and after school at a cost of approximately $12.00 per morning (after rebates) that includes breakfast.
I am sure as parents continue to drop their children off before 8.00am there will continue to be circumstances that place their child at risk of harm.
We are in a fortunate circumstance that our school provides a space inside the school grounds for our students to congregate as other schools (with new security fences) are required to ensure safety and security measures are adhered to by NOT opening their perimeter gates until supervision is provided by the school.
New Fence/Gate School Procedures
Albert and Bergin Road Pedestrian Gates - Gates will open from 8.00am to 8.50am and again at 2.50pm to 3.20pm.
Alice Street Pedestrian Gates – Gates will open at 7.00am and be closed at 4.30pm. The main gate will be open in the morning and the secondary gate at the Bergin Road end of pick up zone will be open in the afternoons.

Thank you for those parents who were able to support their children and the school with the ongoing COVID restrictions placed on the school over Term 1.
We were able to minimise the disruption to learning and assessments as much as possible and continue to hold our sporting and curriculum events.
I would like to take this opportunity to wish Mrs Nicole Lindgren all the very best on her new career ventures.
Nicole has been a valuable colleague and teacher at our school over the last 5 years and has made a positive difference to so many of our students and staff and she will be missed by all of us within our Cranbook school community. While we are all saddened to see her go, we wish her every success and happiness.
I would like to wish all of our Cranbrook families a safe and enjoyable Easter break. Term 2 commences on Tuesday 19th April.
Jeff Capell - Principal
Coming up....
Don't forget......Term 2 begins on TUESDAY, 19 APRIL.
Also coming up next term and something that always has a special place in our hearts, is our ANZAC Day Commemorative Service which will be held in our hall, on Friday, 22nd April at 9.15am. Please join us.
Cranbrook is also represented at the ANZAC Day march on the strand each year. There will be more details about this in Week 1.
Every Day Counts - Attendance
Regular, punctual attendance at school is expected of all students. Students should be present at school ready to prepare for the day's learning by 8:30am.
Late Arrivals
Students arriving after 8:50am must report to the office to receive a lateslip. If a student is late, a letter of explanation from the student's parent/guardian must be presented to the office staff on arrival.
Absence
If a student is absent and the parent/guardian has not notified the school, they will receive an automated text message by 10am that day.
Parents will receive a text message informing them that their child is absent. If you receive one of these text messages, please contact the school to explain the reason for your child’s absence.
A working mobile number should be registered with the school, if available.
Please remember that absence is only marked for the days specified by the parents. If you ring up on a Monday informing that your child is sick and they remain away from school for the following 2 days because they are sick you need to inform us that this was the reason for their absence. You can inform us after the absence via a message directly to the teacher or by contacting our absence hotline or email.
If your child is absent, please leave a message detailing:
- Child's name
- Class
- Reason for absence
- Dates or duration of absence
Absence Hotline - 4726 1260
Absence Email - absences@cranbrookss.eq.edu.au
Absence For More Than 10 Days
What is an exemption and why do I need it?
Every parent of a child of compulsory school age has a legal obligation to ensure their child is enrolled and attending school. Parents can apply for an exemption from this obligation when their child cannot attend or it would be unreasonable in all the circumstances for their child to attend school for a period of more than 10 consecutive school days.
Situations where an application for an exemption may be made include:
- Illness
- Family reasons
- Cultural or religious reasons
If your child is exempt from compulsory schooling, you are excused from your obligation in relation to compulsory schooling.
The school principal is not responsible for providing an educational program for your child, however they may provide advice on other educational options available. Decisions about exemptions for up to one school year are made by the principal and decisions about exemptions for more than one school year are made by the relevant Regional Director of the Department of Education, Training and Employment, responsible for the supervision of the school your child attends.
Attendance Award - Week 8 and 9
Positive Behaviour for Learning
A big congratulations to our weekly PBL snappy winners:
Week 9 was Chloe.
Week 10 was Declan.
In Term 2, we will revisit the qualities of being a safe, responsible and respectful Cranbrook Learner.
Snappy Celebration
For those students who had received 30 snaps AND had no majors this term, they were able to celebrate their achievements and join in the Snappy Celebrations! Congratulations kids, on being fabulous Cranbrook Learners and being Safe - Responsible - Respectful.
Year 5
Last Friday, 5B were lucky to have their LOTE teacher, Ms Emma Nakamura, visit Cranbrook. The class (and the teacher!) were very excited to put a face to the person on the other side of the computer. Students spoke to her in Japanese and learnt how to write and say numbers. It was a great lesson!
As part of year 5's multi-disciplinary units, students had the opportunity to design, build and test a greenhouse. Students experimented with a variety of household- transparent, translucent and opaque materials.
Year 5 Expression of Interest Notes were handed out today in preparation of collecting numbers of students and parent helpers interested in attending Daradgee Environmental Education Centre Camp. See note for more details on this amazing experience.
The Daradgee Environmental Education Centre is located 11km north of Innisfail and 84km south of Cairns in an agricultural landscape reliant on the production of sugar cane, bananas and other fruit, beef cattle, fishing and tourism. The centre's grounds are 1.4ha and adjoin 2.7ha of council reserve made up of pathed rainforest walks, a large tree-lined oval bordering the North Johnstone River.
Please return camp note and $50 deposit (to lock in your spot) by Term 2, Week 1 Friday 22nd April.
What's On in Year 6
The Year 6 cohort have been busy with some exciting excursions around Townsville.
For their English assessment, the students had to create a promotional video for Townsville as a holiday destination. As you can see, they had some fun!
Year 6 students were also lucky enough to be able to go over to Heatley High School to carry out a science experiment! A big thanks to the staff at Heatley.
For Year 5 and 6 parents/carers
You are invited to join our dedicated Facebook page. Please search for 'Year 5 & 6 @ Cranbrook SS' and enter your child's name.
We often share updates, reminders, photos and lots more important info about learning, assessment and events. Parents are reminded to please keep comments/questions respectful and positive or they will be removed. Private messages to teachers will be ignored. Emails, phone calls or meetings remain the appropriate way to communicate.
From The Arts
The wonderful sound of the Songbird Chorus, entertained the Year 1 and 2 students last Thursday. Every little opportunity to perform is always filled with excitement!
It was musical practise for the Year 5s this week......
The Year 6s have had some fun with chairs and drumsticks this week in their music lessons.
See you all next term!
Ms Earle and Mrs Onslow
