Principal's Message
Welcome to our Week 8 newsletter. The term is flying by and isn't it nice to have some cool weather!
Lunches
Can your child open the packet? Please ensure if you are giving your child pre-packaged food that they can open it. Unfortunately, staff on duty may not have time to open the packaging for all students.
EVERY DAY COUNTS… Frequently asked questions
Do I need to let the school know if my child has been away?
Yes – Parents must let the school know the reason for the absence, if not beforehand, then within two days of their child’s return to school.
Can I take my child out of school for family or social occasions?
No – you should arrange leisure activities, visits to family and friends and shopping trips outside of school hours.
Does the occasional day away from school really affect my child’s education?
Yes – Research shows that in Queensland, higher student attendance is associated, on average, with higher student achievement.
What should I do if my child refuses to go to school?
Contact the school as soon as possible for advice and support.
Early Collection of Students
If you have an appointment or need to collect your student/s early, please send a note for the classroom teacher so the student/s can be sent to the office at the appropriate time.
Emergency Contacts
Please ensure the school has up-to-date information regarding emergency contacts so that you can be reached if an illness or accident should occur.
Lost Property
Our lost property collection is growing. Please check our lost property box to claim any of your children's missing belongings.
Reporting
Report Cards will be distributed on Friday, 22nd July and no parent teacher interviews will be offered as part of this process. However you are reminded that you can request a meeting with your child’s teacher any day about any concern that you have. The teachers' email addresses are also included in the report cards for you to contact them electronically if this is preferred.
Have a great weekend everyone.

Year 4 invites you to....
Every Day Counts - Attendance
Regular, punctual attendance at school is expected of all students. Students should be present at school ready to prepare for the day's learning by 8:30am.
Late Arrivals
Students arriving after 8:50am must report to the office to receive a lateslip. If a student is late, a letter of explanation from the student's parent/guardian must be presented to the office staff on arrival.
Absence
If a student is absent and the parent/guardian has not notified the school, they will receive an automated text message by 10am that day.
Parents will receive a text message informing them that their child is absent. If you receive one of these text messages, please contact the school to explain the reason for your child’s absence.
A working mobile number should be registered with the school, if available.
Please remember that absence is only marked for the days specified by the parents. If you ring up on a Monday informing that your child is sick and they remain away from school for the following 2 days because they are sick you need to inform us that this was the reason for their absence. You can inform us after the absence via a message directly to the teacher or by contacting our absence hotline or email.
If your child is absent, please leave a message detailing:
- Child's name
- Class
- Reason for absence
- Dates or duration of absence
Absence Hotline - 4726 1260
Absence Email - absences@cranbrookss.eq.edu.au
Absence For More Than 10 Days
What is an exemption and why do I need it?
Every parent of a child of compulsory school age has a legal obligation to ensure their child is enrolled and attending school. Parents can apply for an exemption from this obligation when their child cannot attend or it would be unreasonable in all the circumstances for their child to attend school for a period of more than 10 consecutive school days.
Situations where an application for an exemption may be made include:
- Illness
- Family reasons
- Cultural or religious reasons
If your child is exempt from compulsory schooling, you are excused from your obligation in relation to compulsory schooling.
The school principal is not responsible for providing an educational program for your child, however they may provide advice on other educational options available. Decisions about exemptions for up to one school year are made by the principal and decisions about exemptions for more than one school year are made by the relevant Regional Director of the Department of Education, Training and Employment, responsible for the supervision of the school your child attends.
Attendance Award
Positive Behaviour for Learning
A big congratulations to our weekly PBL snappy winners:
Week 6 was Ember.
Week 7 was Ella - again!
Thanks for being safe, responsible and respectable students.
In Week 9, our PBL lesson statement is: I respect others' privacy and property.
In Week 10, our PBL lesson statement is: I am resilient.
Cranbrook jumpers/jackets
Cranbrook jumpers and jackets are a part of our compulsory uniform! Not only are they necessary for the cooler weather, they are also handy to have in the airconditioned classrooms - no matter what time of the year. Our P&C have worked hard to be able to offer you two lovely, good quality and practical options.
The jacket is light, windproof and spray proof, has two zipped hand pockets and is lined with soft knit material, making it ideal for wearing at any time. The cost is $45.
The fleece pullover also has two zipped hand pockets and a zip near the neck, allowing the child to protect their neck in the cold but gives the option of having some extra air if it's getting a bit warm. This is our more economical option at $30.
Both items are available in our Uniform Shop, which is open every morning from 8-9am and each Tuesday and Thursday, from 3-4pm. If these times don't suit you, please call Bridget on 0402142961 to arrange an alternative time.
Look what's new in class 1/2!
......and in Year 3, to cement their HASS learning this term, the students went down to Jazzine Barracks and explored the amazing museum and the area of the Jazzine that were used to defend Townsville in World War II. It was a great excursion - made even better with the gorgeous weather!
Year 6 students have been having fun engaging with their Disaster Management Unit. The SES came along and taught, amongst a lot of things, how to tie knots and throw a rope safely in a rescue situation.
From The Arts
Our exciting news for this week, is that our little Preps and their Year 6 buddies are ready to perform for you their Bubble Wrap Rap! Come and watch them this Thursday, in the hall at 2.30pm.
In other performance news, our Songbird and Nightingale Choral groups have the exciting opportunity to perform at the Willows Presbyterian Winter Fair on Saturday, 18 June. Notes have been sent out with the details of this event (and attached below).
Now, for a performance for us (not by us!). Opera Queensland is coming to perform 'The Frog Prince' for us on Tuesday, 9 August at 9am. The performance is open to all students. Tickets are $9 and can be purchased now via the Qkr! app or with cash at the office. Ticket sales close on Friday, 5 August.
Don't forget to keep attending the rehearsals for our Star Warts Musical!
Sports News
Some of our Year 5 and 6 students are having fun representing their school in either Rugby Union, Touch Football or Soccer. There's been some wins and losses, however, it's great to see the smiles that are on the faces when they return. For some children, this is their first time getting out to try these sports and encouragement is always the name of the game. We had a parent write in to say that they had a very nervous child join the soccer team and play their first game in round 1. They were very proud to report the amazing sportsmanship that came from the boys division 3 team.... ...Cranbrook was well and truly in the lead but there was more cheering coming from our kids than the opposition, when the opposition scored their one (and only) goal. Their child enjoyed the game and the team spirit with which he was surrounded by.
Our touch students have been enjoying their games too - the weather was just beautiful this week and we loved having some of our parents along to watch. Here are some pics of our social competition kids in action.
Mr Wilson is a very well known figure in the Townsville Touch Football world and so Cranbrook is in charge of setting up and overseeing the running of the competition each week. That means, we need to welcome everyone, give the 'housekeeping' details and announce the beginning, end and break times of the games. It's a very important and responsible job, however, our students have been doing a brilliant job.
Week 9 will be the last day for sport for Term 2. We'll we back playing in Term 3 on 21/28 July and 4 August.
Here's a recap of how Season 2 goes:
Games are played between 12 - 2.15pm at various locations. As we have information about the games, we'll endeavour to share it with you.
Rugby Union - games are played at the Townsville & District Rugby Union grounds located on Hugh Street. MOUTHGUARDS are mandatory unless signed permission has been recorded with the school.
Touch Football - games are played at Greenwood Park on Thuringowa Drive.
Soccer - is played at Brolga Park within the Murray Sporting Complex on William Angliss Drive. Boys Division 1 will play at 12.30pm on either fields 2/3/4 or 11C. Boys Division 3 will play at 1.15pm on either fields 8A/8B/8C. Girls Division 3 will play at 12.30pm on either fields 8A/8B/8C.
All students must wear their full school uniform, including school hat and bring a waterbottle.

Our Athletics Carnival will be held on Monday, 20 June at school. Our morning will start off with the students in their house team, coming out on to the oval doing their war cries, around 8.50am. The Junior Carnival (students in Prep/Year 1/Year 2 (born 2015) will conclude at around 1pm - the Seniors will go through to 2pm. We will not be announcing the age champion winners or the champion house until Thursday afternoon on parade. Look out for more details next week.

A big congratulations to Harley Wakelin on his recent achievements in tennis. Harley made the Thuringowa team and won all three of his games. He then went on to compete in Northern Regional trials in Home Hill, where he won his first two games and then lost in the tie-breaker, in his third and final game. Amazing effort, Harley. Well done.
Interest Groups
On Thursdays, some students choose to participate in Interschool sport, while some choose to join the interest groups back at school.
One of those groups is Coding Club. Here the students are creating either a Snake Game or a Paddle Game in Scratch.
Another of our interest groups helped to make the decorations that will be used to decorate the Resource Centre for Bookfair this coming week. Haven't they done an amazing job!

Our Cleaners!
It's School Cleaners Day today, so a big thank you, goes to our awesome team who clean and tidy our school every morning and afternoon for us. Some of them are in the picture below.
We asked the ladies to tell us why they like being at Cranbrook. Here's what they said:
We love that we are appreciated here. The teachers are great and support us in making the students tidy their rooms in the afternoon. Most of the kids are generally tidy and give us an acceptable level of respect.
When talking about Cranbrook cleaners, we cannot fail to mention our Marg (who missed the photo!). Marg has been lovingly cleaning our school on a full time basis, for over 30 years. She is the eyes and ears of our school and if Marg doesn't know it, it's not worth knowing! After all these years, Marg recently dropped back to working just 3 days a week - and we all miss her already!
Thank you to all our cleaners - we appreciate you very much.
