Principal's Message
Welcome back everyone to our next forty days of learning in Term Three.
I would like to take this opportunity to extend a very warm ‘Cranbrook State School’ welcome to our new families who are joining us this Term.
It is always wonderful to see all newcomers settle in so quickly and adapt to our daily routines and culture. Term Three is always one of the busiest in every school year. There will no doubt be other activities and events along the way to keep us even busier. If you are not yet following us via Social Media, I encourage you to like our school Facebook page as another way to keep abreast of our news.
Semester 1 Report Cards
Report cards for Semester 1 will be sent out (paper copy and email) today.
Please ensure your email addresses are up to date with our office staff to ensure you receive your digital copy.
Procedures for Ensuring Safety
Parents and carers, a reminder to please ensure that:
- you sign your children in through the office if they are late to school,
- you sign them out if you need to collect them early (including from sick bay), and
- you sign them in and out if they are out of school for a period of time during the day.
You will be issued with an Early Departure/Exit Slip from our system when you report to the office to collect your child. Teachers will be instructed not to release children who have not presented with the Early Departure/Exit Slip. This is very important to track where children are, and also for our official record keeping.
Term 3 Extra-Curricular Activities
During Term 3, Cranbrook State School will offer a wide range of Extra-Curricular Activities for students to participate in, largely due to the generosity and enthusiasm of the teachers who volunteer their own time. Some parents may have noticed that offers to participate in Piano and Guitar lessons have already been emailed.
The Process for Term 3
1. A schedule of the Extra-Curricular activities will be released via email and Facebook on Monday.
2. Extra-Curricular activities begin and conclude at different times during the term.
3. Students will be reminded through morning announcements during week 3 of what activities are available on that day.
4. If students attend on that day the teacher will make a decision as to who can attend and who cannot based on numbers.
5. If the activity is an afternoon or before school activity, all students can attend in Week 3 to determine who can join.
Please discuss with your child about what opportunities they may wish to be involved in and remind them about their attendance on a weekly basis.
Daily Absence Notification
Queensland state schools are required to advise parents/carers when their child is absent without explanation as soon as practicable on that day, allowing time for parents/carers to respond before the end of the school day. Are you receiving your text message when your child is absent? If not, please contact the school to update your contact information.
Parents can reply text the reason for their child's absence and then you won't need to write a note or call our Absence Hotline.
School Facilities Works
Construction has begun on the new oval bubblers for student access and is expected to be completed during the September holidays.
The replacement of the steps to some of our modular buildings has begun and is expected to be completed as soon as the materials that are on back order arrive.
Classroom Upgrades – the final covering of walls in acoustic sheeting should be completed within the next 2 weeks when the materials arrive that are on back order.
Road Works
Road works continue on Alice Street, out the front of the school. Thanks for your patience during this time.

Absence For More Than 10 Days
What is an exemption and why do I need it?
Every parent of a child of compulsory school age has a legal obligation to ensure their child is enrolled and attending school. Parents can apply for an exemption from this obligation when their child cannot attend or it would be unreasonable in all the circumstances for their child to attend school for a period of more than 10 consecutive school days.
Situations where an application for an exemption may be made include:
- Illness
- Family reasons
- Cultural or religious reasons
If your child is exempt from compulsory schooling, you are excused from your obligation in relation to compulsory schooling.
The school principal is not responsible for providing an educational program for your child, however they may provide advice on other educational options available. Decisions about exemptions for up to one school year are made by the principal and decisions about exemptions for more than one school year are made by the relevant Regional Director of the Department of Education, Training and Employment, responsible for the supervision of the school your child attends.
Positive Behaviour for Learning
A big congratulations to our weekly PBL snappy winners:
Week 1 was Lily.
Week 2 was Percy.
Thanks for being safe, responsible and respectable students.
In Week 1, we looked at being Responsible and following routines and transitions.
In Week 2, we looked at being Safe and acting safely.
In Week 3, we will talk about being Respectful and showing self-respect, courtesy and pride.
In Week 4, we will talk about being Responsible and acting as an Upstander.
Cranbrook jumpers/jackets
Cranbrook jumpers and jackets are a part of our compulsory uniform! Not only are they necessary for the cooler weather, they are also handy to have in the airconditioned classrooms - no matter what time of the year. Our P&C have worked hard to be able to offer you two lovely, good quality and practical options.
The jacket is light, windproof and spray proof, has two zipped hand pockets and is lined with soft knit material, making it ideal for wearing at any time. The cost is $45.
The fleece pullover also has two zipped hand pockets and a zip near the neck, allowing the child to protect their neck in the cold but gives the option of having some extra air if it's getting a bit warm. This is our more economical option at $30.
Both items are available in our Uniform Shop, which is open every morning from 8-9am and each Tuesday and Thursday, from 3-4pm. If these times don't suit you, please call Bridget on 0402142961 to arrange an alternative time.

SHEP is now a firmly established aspect of music learning in Queensland, bringing together young people from all over the State, in regional centres and Brisbane to share their passion for making music.

Yesterday, the mixed social touch team continued to learn and develop their skills together. It was a lovely little game with some great touchdowns by Harley and Zakai. One student came off the field, stating that he's going home to practise his catching. This little team is improving in both their skills and teamwork, every week. Worth a mention though, is our little encourager, Connor, who gets the team together and has a positive word for everyone. In the game against Kirwan, we had one of their seniors who represents NQ for touch, referee our game. Connor remarked to me and then later to both the Kirwan student and his teacher, about how competent, fair and helpful he was and how much Connor enjoyed the game with him. A great example of sportsmanship and kindness. Thanks Connor.

Our seniors have their Senior Shirts and they look fabulous!
It's a beautiful time of the year and our gardens are looking lovely. The bowerbird thinks so too! Looks like he is a bit partial to grey and white. It's also a great time for some outdoor learning.

Our Global Tropics Program participation
In collaboration with James Cook University, the Global Tropics Future Project has engaged and inspired more than 250 Young Scholars from 40 North Queensland schools.
As a Global Tropics Future Young Scholar, a student will have the opportunity to engage and collaborate with other likeminded science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) students (and STEM professionals from a wide range of careers) in developing solutions to the challenges that face our world and in particular the Global Tropics.
Throughout the year, selected students from Year 5 and 6 collaborate with students from other North Queensland schools and work through various challenges to solve tasks presented to them.
On the last day of Term 2, our Global Tropics Team headed out to JCU for this challenge: to adapt current sustainable living practices (food, shelter or water) so that it is viable to develop a colony on the planet Mars. We need to reduce the pressure on Earth due to the increasing population and therefore you will innovate sustainable practices that will enable humans to live on Mars.
Here's what some of our students think about being involved in Global Tropics:
Noah says......The things I love about global tropics are how you get to met new people and learn about stuff you would never learn in class.
The JCU day was really cool. It involved teamwork, challange, and imagination......from Jane.
Paarth says.....what I like about GT is that they teach very clearly and the stem activities are very fun.
Year 6 Camp
Here's some photos from the very awesome Year 6 camp at Mungalli Falls on the Tablelands. Very cold, sometimes wet, sometimes muddy, challenging and really, really fantastic!!!
In the community
If you made it to the stadium for the Roar vs Aston Villa soccer match on Wednesday night, you may have seen a few familiar faces on the field.....
