For more information about how school communities can embrace autism, visit the Autism Hub website.
Kids do Better when Parents are Involved in School Life
Recent research confirms that family involvement in education can improve future opportunities for children, regardless of background. For tips on the best way to positively support your child’s education and future success, try the Triple P – Positive Parenting Program. It’s free in Queensland.
Helping your Child to Learn
Did you know that there are some simple things parents can do to help their children learn across all year levels? Talking with your child about their learning and goals, and limiting screen time can make a difference. For more ideas on ways to engage with your child’s learning visit https://education.qld.gov.au/parents-and-carers/community-engagement/parents
Have You Registered for QParents Yet?
Are you using QParents to stay in contact with our school and to access information about your child’s schooling? If you haven’t yet registered for QParents, register now. QParents is a great way to stay informed about what’s happening in your child’s school life.
You can provide your 100 points of identity documents for registration online through QParents, or in person at your school. If you have limited identity documents, or experience difficulties with registering, please contact our school for help.
Lost Property
There are a number lost property items in our large undercover area. If your child is missing any of their belongings, please ask them to check the lost property area.
Please remember to clearly label all of your child's belongings so that lost items can easily be identified and returned.
2022 Prep Enrolments
Enrolments for Prep next year are now welcome. Children born between 1 July 2017 and 30 June 2018 are eligible to enrol. Early Entry Applications for students born in July 2018 may also be submitted for consideration. An original birth certificate is essential for enrolment. Prep Transition Program
Cranbrook State School will be running an 8 week Prep Transition Program on Thursdays between 8am and 9.40am, from 20 October to 10 December. There will also be one evening session on Wednesday, 16 November, 5.30-6.30pm.
Children enrolled in our program will be involved in numerous literacy, numeracy and physical development activities. We also provide parents and guardians with parent information sessions to become familiar with our school surroundings, staff and school procedures.
To enrol your child into our program, please contact our office on 4726 1222.
Under 8's Day
The theme of this year's Under 8's Day was 'playing in a changing world’. Our teachers put together an action-packed morning of activities in our Prep/Year One Oval last Friday to celebrate! A fun morning was had by all! Check out our gallery of photos below.
School Uniform Policy
Cranbrook is a uniform wearing school. All students should come dressed each day in the full school uniform:
- Shorts/Skorts
- Polo – school and sports
- HAT (no other hats should be worn and students will be asked to place non-school hats in their bags)
Cranbrook School Uniforms can be purchased from the P & C Uniform Shop located at the back of the Hall.
Academic Achievement Awards
At our Junior and Senior Parades over the next fortnight, students who achieved four or more A's on their report cards for Semester One will be awarded an Academic Achievement Award. Parents will also be invited to attend the recognition of this amazing achievement.
Our Academic Achievement Award recognises students in Years 3 to 6 who achieved four or more A's across all learning areas. Congratulations to these Cranbrook Learners on their outstanding achievement, demonstrating commitment and excellence towards their learning.
Staff Changes
3A's Mrs Vapor, will be taking extended family leave as of this coming Monday, 8 August and through the remainder of the school year. Ms Sam Negra will extend her teaching days with 3A to now be Monday and Tuesday, with Mrs Bianca Gordon taking the class from Wednesday through to Friday. Mrs Gordon has returned to us from maternity leave and is therefore very familiar with the students and our school.
Term 3 Extra-Curricular Activities
During Term 3, Cranbrook State School will offer a wide range of Extra-Curricular Activities for students to participate in, largely due to the generosity and enthusiasm of the teachers who volunteer their own time. Some parents may have noticed that offers to participate in Piano and Guitar lessons have already been emailed.
The Process for Term 3
1. A schedule of the Extra-Curricular activities will be released via email and Facebook.
2. Extra-Curricular activities begin and conclude at different times during the term.
3. Students have been reminded through morning announcements this week of what activities are available on that day.
4. If students attend on that day the teacher will make a decision as to who can attend and who cannot based on numbers.
5. If the activity is an afternoon or before school activity, all students can attend in Week 4 to determine who can join.
Please discuss with your child about what opportunities they may wish to be involved in and remind them about their attendance on a weekly basis.
Have a great weekend everyone!
Regards
Jeff Capell - Principal

Absence For More Than 10 Days
What is an exemption and why do I need it?
Every parent of a child of compulsory school age has a legal obligation to ensure their child is enrolled and attending school. Parents can apply for an exemption from this obligation when their child cannot attend or it would be unreasonable in all the circumstances for their child to attend school for a period of more than 10 consecutive school days.
Situations where an application for an exemption may be made include:
- Illness
- Family reasons
- Cultural or religious reasons
If your child is exempt from compulsory schooling, you are excused from your obligation in relation to compulsory schooling.
The school principal is not responsible for providing an educational program for your child, however they may provide advice on other educational options available. Decisions about exemptions for up to one school year are made by the principal and decisions about exemptions for more than one school year are made by the relevant Regional Director of the Department of Education, Training and Employment, responsible for the supervision of the school your child attends.

Learning in Year 4

Year 5 Excursion to JCU
We went to JCU to watch these animals because we are learning about adaptation. I enjoyed watching the fish swimming and watching the other animals do their thing. The fish tanks were so big and all the different types of fish were beautiful. From Dwayne
Today me and my class 5A went to JCU for an excursion. When we first hopped off the bus we were looking at exotic plants and trees. We got to smell some leaves of the plants. The smell of the leaves was strong so the predators stay away and not eat the plants. After that we went to have a look at the aquarium that had different types of crazy fish. They even had Dory and Nemo! In another area was a glass cage that had 2 crocodiles and right next to it was a home for some green frogs and a green snake. That was pretty cool to see. There were more animals there to see too. My favourite part was when we looked at the aquarium and the other amazing creatures. From Olivia.
Year 2 Excursion to Billabong Sanctuary
On Monday 1st August, 2A, 2B and 1/2E visited Billabong Sanctuary to supplement our learning of life cycles in Science for Year 2’s and informative texts in English for 1/2E. We split into 3 groups and rotated between the Rangers as they talked about each animal. Ranger Beau introduced us to some reptiles, namely snakes as he described their life cycle, diet and predators while Ranger Claire talked to us about koalas. Ranger Ray described the features of the cassowary, explaining what the casque on top if its head is used for (to cool it down and to communicate). He also explained how important cassowaries were for the environment. We then enjoyed some free time around the park, the favourite being the biggest crocodile Billabong has, Krakatoa.
Testimonials:
Mikaya: I like the venomous snakes because Ranger Beau told us facts about them.
Kayden: I loved Krakatoa (a crocodile) because he was so big.
Melanie: I liked when we saw the big croc because it was massive but I know I couldn’t touch it.
Charlotte: I liked when we went to see the cassowary because Ranger Ray told us facts about it.
Madison: We saw a baby koala and it was so cute.
Archie: I liked seeing all of the animals because they were interesting.

Our Education Partners
Cranbrook State School enjoys a great partnership with several other educational facilities across our city, such as Heatley High, Thuringowa State High and James Cook University.
Another of those is Ignatius Park College. Each Wednesday fortnight, we are fortunate enough to have a group of Year 11 students who, as part of their 'Volunteer Program' come and engage with our students, help out in various roles and even learn new skills for themselves.
