School Uniform Policy
Cranbrook is a uniform wearing school. All students should come dressed each day in the full school uniform:
- Shorts/Skorts
- Polo – school and sports
- HAT (no other hats should be worn and students asked to place non-school hats in their bags)
It is important to recognise that our school uniform policy is a vital part of the education strategy of our school. At Cranbrook, we value, neat, tidy, dignified personal presentation which will prepare students for their future, enhance their leadership skills and ensures that they take pride in being part of a team.
Cranbrook School Uniforms can be purchased from the P & C Uniform Shop located at the back of the Hall.
Enjoy the weekend everyone!

Absence For More Than 10 Days
What is an exemption and why do I need it?
Every parent of a child of compulsory school age has a legal obligation to ensure their child is enrolled and attending school. Parents can apply for an exemption from this obligation when their child cannot attend or it would be unreasonable in all the circumstances for their child to attend school for a period of more than 10 consecutive school days.
Situations where an application for an exemption may be made include:
- Illness
- Family reasons
- Cultural or religious reasons
If your child is exempt from compulsory schooling, you are excused from your obligation in relation to compulsory schooling.
The school principal is not responsible for providing an educational program for your child, however they may provide advice on other educational options available. Decisions about exemptions for up to one school year are made by the principal and decisions about exemptions for more than one school year are made by the relevant Regional Director of the Department of Education, Training and Employment, responsible for the supervision of the school your child attends.

In Week 6, we looked at being Responsible and making sure we are determined to improve.
In Week 7, we will talk about being Respectful by including everyone.
In Week 8, we will talk about being Responsible by accepting responsibility.
Cranbrook Learning
We are very excited to recognise our Academic Excellence achievers, who have obtained 4 As or more, in the Semester 1 reporting period.
Congratulations students and well done!
Learning in Year 5
Konichiwa! Year 5 students have been busy with online Japanese lessons from Cairns School of Distance Education. Each week, students log on to a computer and access an online lesson. Students complete their LOTE booklet and ask questions or write their answers in Japanese in the chatbox.
NAIDOC Week 2022
We have had a great two days celebrating NAIDOC! NAIDOC Week is an opportunity for all Australians to learn about First Nations cultures and histories and participate in celebrations of the oldest, continuous living cultures on earth.
Across the last two days, our Senior Indigenous Students have helped our school to host a special parade and have fun with a variety of Indigenous activities. In conclusion today, we sampled some amazing Kup Murri - beef/chicken/pork, root vegetables and damper, all traditionally and lovingly prepared and cooked by our own Zaro-Lui family.
Thank you very much to our Cranbrook community who came along and were involved in our NAIDOC celebrations: Aunty Rita and her girls, Zaro-Lui Family and Grandma Pat Hoolihan. We loved having you being a part of our special celebrations.

Sports News
Athletics
Well, what a day it was down at 'Red Track' last week. It took 41 years, but we did it....Cranbrook won our first 'C' Schools Athletics competition! We had so much fun. The students behaved and performed their best, encouraged and cheered for each other and most had a smile on their face. We had some stumbles, some tears and some disappointment, however, one of my favourite comments came from a student who ran the 200m. He said after the race with a smile I have never seen on his face before:
'Miss - did you see me? I smashed it. I was so nervous at the start and even when I started running, but then when I came around the bend and heard the crowd cheering, I just ran and wasn't nervous anymore.'
A big congratulations to every student who was there and part of the team. A big thank you to the teachers for their efforts both beforehand with the extra trainings and on the day also.
Here's some words from Mrs Woods, our HPE Teacher:
Week 5 was an exciting week in sport with a group of selected students representing Cranbrook at the ‘C’ schools Red Track (Athletics) Carnival. Mrs Woods is very proud of all the students as they displayed wonderful sportsmanship and competed with 100% heart and pride. Throughout the day I received wonderful comments from parents and carnival officials about how well our students were doing in their events and that no matter where they finished they had a positive attitude.
The students competed so well that Cranbrook won 2 trophies-Boys aggregate and the combined aggregate. We also had many students receive awards for certain events with 12 of our students being selected to compete at NQ trails. We also had 2 students break records in their events.
Record breakers:
· Ray - High jump. Record was 1m 12 and Ray jumped 1m 15
· William - 200m. Record was 28.47 and Will ran 27.57
The following students are competing at NQ trials in the following events:
· Harley - Shot put
· Joel - Shout Put
· Hunter - 100m
· Samicky - 100m and 200m
· Kobi - 100m and 800m
· William - 100m, 200m, 800m, long jump and high jump
· Dumani - 100m
· Emelea - 100m and high jump
· Deakyn - 800m
· Ray - High jump
· Kadisha - 100m
Mrs Woods would like to say a big thankyou to all the coaches (Mr Wilson, Mrs Flor, Mrs Morgan, Mrs Scipilliti and Mrs Asquith) that helped to get the kids ready for their events and to the kids for being amazing.
WELL DONE CRANBROOK!!! MRS WOODS IS VERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRY PROUD OF YOU ALL!!
We'll feature our team again with their certificates in the Week 8 newsletter.

Spotlight on Authors and Illustrators
With Bookweek just around the corner, we thought we'd highlight some special literacy achievements by one of our past and one of our current students.
Brooklyn Ross, Vice-Captain of Cranbrook in 2016, worked on the illustrations for this book last year and is very excited to now have the book published, therefore officially making her an illustrator! Brooklyn is very passionate about her art and even though she is still completing Year 12, she is very busy as an artist for a company in the UK, drawing plane tag backings on a regular basis. Brooklyn has also just been contracted by a Brisbane company to commission 200 emojis for an upcoming app they will launch. Brooklyn hopes to inspire Cranbrook students to pursue their passion for art, just like she did! The book, 'The Very Worried Wombat' written by Mark Edward Green, will be available to borrow in the library soon. You can also check out some more of Brooklyn's work on her instagram page: roklynss or at www.tcrosses.wixsite.com/roklynstudios/work.

Meet current Year 6 student, Atylda. Atylda has vision impairment - with the help of her glasses, Atylda is still able to see, however, she has a keen interest in learning and sharing, the Braille language with us all. Braille is the language that has been developed to assist with reading without the use of sight. Atylda has written two Braille stories that are available in the library to look through.
