Cranbrook Newsletter - Term 3 Week 10 2022
Principal's Message
Welcome to our last newsletter for Term 3!
Prep in 2023
Enrolments for Prep next year are now welcome. Children born between 1 July 2017 and 30 June 2018 are eligible to enrol. Remember a copy of a birth certificate is essential for enrolment.
Birth Certificates for Children Starting Prep - Parents of children born between 1 July 2015 and 30 June 2016 who are starting Prep in 2021 will need a birth certificate to enrol them in the Prep Year. The Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages is encouraging parents to apply for birth certificates now to avoid the new school year rush.
To apply for a standard or commemorative birth certificate you can:
- Download an application form from https://www.qld.gov.au/law/births-deaths-marriages-and-divorces/birth-death-and-marriage-certificates/birth-certificates
- Visit the Registry (Court House) in Walker Street, Townsville.
Don’t leave it to the last minute – apply for a birth certificate now.
Early Entry to Prep
Children who are younger than the prescribed age for Prep may be enrolled in Prep if:
* they turn 5 years by 31st July in the year of proposed attendance; and
* the principal is satisfied the child is ready for education in Prep, having regard to their attributes (including ability, aptitude, social and emotional competence, physical development, and level of knowledge and understanding).
The principal may also enrol a child in Prep who is younger than the prescribed age if the child:
* has previously started education that is equivalent to Prep in another state or country; and
* is considered ready for education in Prep, having regard to their attributes (including ability, aptitude, social and emotional competence, physical development, and level of knowledge and understanding).
Delayed Entry
The Preparatory (PREP) Year is now compulsory. This means parents who delay the entry of their child to school do not have the option of not completing Prep. Every child must now complete Prep rather than starting at Year 1.
Transition to School Resources to Support Your Child
There are many ways a parent or carer can help their child transition from home or kindy to school.
Take a look at the short video from the Department of Education, 'What is a Transition Statement' which is one of several videos on their website designed to assist families, early education and care services and schools to support positive transitions to Prep.
Student Resource Scheme
If you have OUTSTANDING Student Resource fees, these are due by the end of this term. We are in the process of sending home forms to parents who have not paid their students fees. If your student receives a form, please contact the office to make payment ASAP. There are a few payment options, so please contact the office to find out about these.

Enjoy the break. See you back on Tuesday, 4 October.

Every Day Counts - Attendance
Regular, punctual attendance at school is expected of all students. Students should be present at school ready to prepare for the day's learning by 8:30am.
Late Arrivals
Students arriving after 8:50am must report to the office to receive a lateslip. If a student is late, a letter of explanation from the student's parent/guardian must be presented to the office staff on arrival.
Absence
If a student is absent and the parent/guardian has not notified the school, they will receive an automated text message by 10am that day.
Parents will receive a text message informing them that their child is absent. If you receive one of these text messages, please contact the school to explain the reason for your child’s absence.
A working mobile number should be registered with the school, if available.
Please remember that absence is only marked for the days specified by the parents. If you ring up on a Monday informing that your child is sick and they remain away from school for the following 2 days because they are sick you need to inform us that this was the reason for their absence. Absence For More Than 10 Days
What is an exemption and why do I need it?
Every parent of a child of compulsory school age has a legal obligation to ensure their child is enrolled and attending school. Parents can apply for an exemption from this obligation when their child cannot attend or it would be unreasonable in all the circumstances for their child to attend school for a period of more than 10 consecutive school days.
Situations where an application for an exemption may be made include:
- Illness
- Family reasons
- Cultural or religious reasons
If your child is exempt from compulsory schooling, you are excused from your obligation in relation to compulsory schooling.
The school principal is not responsible for providing an educational program for your child, however they may provide advice on other educational options available. Decisions about exemptions for up to one school year are made by the principal and decisions about exemptions for more than one school year are made by the relevant Regional Director of the Department of Education, Training and Employment, responsible for the supervision of the school your child attends.
Positive Behaviour for Learning
A big congratulations to our weekly PBL snappy winners:
Week 9 was Josh.
.....and a double whammy for Week 10, Harley and Connor.
Thanks for being safe, responsible and respectable students!
In Week 9, we looked at Respect and how we must respect others' privacy and property.
This week, we looked at being Responsible and helping ourselves to be resilient.
At the end of Week 5 and Week 10 each term, we hold a 'Snappy Celebration' for those students who have reached the PBL goal of 15 and then 30 snaps and without any 'majors' (negative behaviour reports).
Here's some pics of how we celebrated today.....
Cranbrook Learning
Learning in Year 1
For their Design Technology unit, the Year 1s are making sock puppets to perform in a Puppet Show!
Learning in Year 3
Last week, a ranger from Hands on Wildlife came to visit Year 3 to introduce animals and explain procedures about How to Care for Animals. Students had the opportunity to touch the animals. We were able to meet 2 lizards, a turtle, a possum, a snake and a crocodile.
The amazing ranger demonstrated the procedures of caring for animals, to support Year 3 with their procedure assessments in English.
Congratulations to our Year 5 and Year 6 Global Tropics students on completion of their 'Cyberattack Chaos' challenge. This challenge provided these young scholars with a design thinking experience and skills to collaborate in a virtual environment. The students worked in partnership with industry and community organisations to investigate the impact of cyberattacks on smart cities and how to protect them from digital infiltration and disruption.
A special commendation was awarded to Hunter Eales for collaborating effectively and respectfully with others during this challenge. His commitment to enriching his STEM skills was commendable and his work alongside his peers, exceptional. Congratulations, Hunter. What amazing qualities to be noted for.
Year 1 fun
Our students absolutely loved their visit from the Fire Department, as you can see on their faces! A big thanks to our Firies for their time and instruction.
On Wednesday, our Year 6s held their culminating event and shared what they had learned about Federation this term. There was lots of fun eating quiche, damper and drinking lemonade and watching Mr Von Wald crack his whip and share a story or two about living on the land. Thank you very much to the families who were able to come along and join in.
Making the quiche and the damper, gave the students an opportunity to put into practice, the skills they had learnt in their Maths unit: measurements, fractions of a quantity, metric conversions and solving problems involving decimal places.
A special request from Year 6 to help them with their learning in Term 4........Would there be any families of Vietnamese heritage who would be able to please assist and introduce us to the Vietnamese culture - cooking, games, experiences, traditions etc.? The Year 6 students next term, will be studying refugees and in particular, learning from Anh Do's experiences of coming as a refugee to Australia. Please contact our Year 6 Cohort Leader, Nicole Bartels via email (nbart47@eq.edu.au) as soon as possbile, if you can help in any way. Many thanks!
From The Arts
What a super busy term we have had in The Arts! Well done to each and every student for enduring such a hectic, but fun, few weeks. Here's just a few things that we've been up to.....
Our Preps and Year 6s are still enjoying their 'buddy' time.
Here's what they have been working on together.
Remember the 'Cafe' that the Year 1s were using as their setting for drama? Here's a little pic that shows the cafe in action, this time with Mrs Onslow doing the acting as the waitress and the students practising their manners as customers - with real food and drinks!
Thanks Mrs Onslow and Ms Earle!
The Wednesday Visual Arts group have been looking at the work of Gary Hirsch and have created their own versions of Bot Joys. The group collaborated to select 9 different bots and their meaning, to share with the school. These are painted on dominos which have been hidden all over the school. Any student who finds a bot joy can keep it or re-hide it for someone else to find. (.....and didn't the students have fun finding them!!!)
If you didn't get to see our Year 4 and 5 (and some Year 6s) in the Star Warts Musical, you sadly missed an amazing show! It was incredible. A massive congratulations to all of our students and staff who were involved in the performances. A huge and heartfelt thanks to the staff and parents who helped us before, during and after the performances, especially with building props and assisting with hair and makeup. A special note of thanks and acknowledgement to Mrs Amanda Flor, for the many, many, hours she put in to the creating and making of the costumes. The last mention, however by no means the least, is our wonderful, creative, talented, dedicated, enthusiastic, humble, Arts Teachers: Ms Sarah Earle and Mrs Suellen Onslow. Both of these ladies are so incredibly amazing and as a school (and as fellow workers too) we are extremly fortunate and appreciative of them. Thank you ladies. Of course, we can't wait until next year's musical!!!
Week 9 and 10 has seen our Instrumental, Choral and Drama students participate in the Townsville Eisteddfod - some of them on multiple occassions! Well done to everyone. Thank you students, for your commitment and practise. Thank you families for encouraging their practise and for getting them on time and looking neat and tidy. Thank you teachers, for your effort and encouragement. We had some fun along the way, as you will see from the pics below.
Here are the results:
Nightingale Chorus - Highly Commended
Songbird Chorus - Highly commended
Combined Nightingale and Songbird Chorus- 3rd
Percussion Ensemble- 2nd
Drama Excellence- 2nd
String Ensemble, String Orchestra, Concert Band didn’t place but played really well and should be proud of their effort. Ms Earle and Mrs Onslow are super proud of all our performers!
It was also noted on several occassions, that Cranbrook showed kindness and excellent behaviour.

It may have been back in August, however, here are some of our little stars with their certificates, from the Interschool Athletics.
A few weeks ago, Mrs Woods had the pleasure of taking a selected group to the T20 Primary Schools Cricket Blast on the 7th of September. Both the girls and boys teams played well and had a great day full of fun and cricket. Mrs Woods was very proud of the sportsmanship they showed to other teams and the effort they put in throughout all 5 games they played.
