Positive Behaviour for Learning
Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) is an evidence-based whole school framework that actively promotes positive behaviour. It is based on research and is designed to support all students to achieve their best academically, socially and behaviourally. It enables students to develop a clear understanding of required expectations, become responsible for their own behaviour and work together to create a positive productive and harmonious learning community.
Our expectations have not changed and our focus is still on being SAFE, being RESPONSIBLE and being RESPECTFUL, however our means of addressing these expectations will change as we will explicitly teach and reinforce expected behaviours through focussed lessons.
Prep is compulsory 2023
The Queensland Parliament recently made important changes to the Education (General Provisions) Act 2006. From next year, it will be compulsory for all Queensland children to undertake the Preparatory (Prep) Year, prior to entering Year 1. The legislation identifies specific exceptions that can be determined by principals on a case-by-case basis. We have seen such positive learning outcomes since the introduction of Prep and I am pleased all children will now enjoy this important start to their learning.
Enrolments for Prep next year are now welcome. Children born between 1 July 2017 and 30 June 2018 are eligible to enrol. Remember a copy of a birth certificate is essential for enrolment. Please see the flyer in this newsletter for information regarding our Prep Transition Program starting on Tuesday 8th November .
Transition to School Resources to Support Your Child
There are many ways a parent or carer can help their child transition from home or kindy to school.
Take a look at the short video from the Department of Education, Undurba State School to find out how transition statements are supporting a great start to school; which is one of several videos on their website designed to assist families, early education and care services and schools to support positive transitions to Prep.
More helpful resources can be found on the Department's website at: https://earlychildhood.qld.gov.au

School Uniform Policy
Cranbrook is a uniform wearing school. All students should come dressed each day in the full school uniform:
- Shorts/Skorts
- Polo – school and sports
- HAT (no other hats should be worn and students asked to place non-school hats in their bags
It is important to recognise that our school uniform policy is a vital part of the education strategy of our school. At Cranbrook, we value, neat, tidy, dignified personal presentation which will prepare students for their future, enhance their leadership skills and ensures that they take pride in being part of a team.
Cranbrook School Uniforms can be purchased from the P & C Uniform Shop located at the back of the Hall.
Term 4 Extra Curricular Activities
During Term 4, Cranbrook State School will again offer a wide range of Extra-Curricular Activities for students to participate in due to the generosity and enthusiasm of the teachers who volunteer their own time. Some parents may have noticed that the Piano and Guitar email offers to participate in these extra curricula activities have already been emailed. The Term 4 Activity Schedule (PDF) will be available as soon as it is confirmed.
Please discuss with your child about what opportunities they may wish to be involved in and remind them about their attendance on a weekly basis.
Lunches
Over the last couple of days there has been a constant stream of children coming to the office saying they have not had enough to eat. Please ensure that your children have enough food in their lunches to last them for both eating breaks. Perhaps an extra sandwich or piece of fruit might help.
Healthy Snack/Brain Food Snack
Many of our teachers allow students to have a healthy/brain food snack in their class. Please make sure the 'brain builder/healthy' food is easy to eat with fingers and is not messy or drippy.
Some suggestions for healthy snack are:
• Dried fruit e.g. apricots, prunes, raisins, sultanas
• Fresh vegetables e.g. carrots, celery sticks, beans, snow peas
• Rice Cakes
• Cheese sticks and cubes
• Seeds e.g. sunflower, sesame, linseed
• Fresh fruit e.g. grapes, apple pieces, blueberries, strawberries, baby tomatoes
• Chickpeas and other legumes
DO NOT send any of the following:
• Processed foods e.g. muesli bars, biscuits, cakes
• Lollies or anything high in sugar
• Chips and Crisps
• Bread
Conflict
Conflict is natural and inevitable in every aspects of life. Conflict generally comes across as negative. However, confrontation of ideas and attitudes is natural and essential to our human existence. The management of conflict determines whether it will have negative or positive consequences on our relationships. A well-managed conflict can actually strengthen a relationship.
The following are some tips you might consider to strengthen the relationship or partnership:
- Do not make it personal.
- Avoid putting down the other person's ideas and beliefs. Resist the temptation to abuse, use sarcasm, or make derogatory comments. This will allow you to get your point across in the most effective way.
- Use "I" statements to communicate how you feel, what you think, and what you want or need. We need to avoid using "you" statements, as these can sound argumentative.
- Listen to others’ point of view. Consider and respect the other person's perspective.
- Stay calm. This is not easy; it is a huge challenge to stay calm and rational when you feel angry or passionate about something.
As adults, we need to model these behaviour and actions to our children.
In this contemporary era we live in, social media has become a primary medium through which individuals voice their opinions. While the ability to express one’s thoughts through the internet is wonderful, it is also important that individuals learn how to do so respectfully. If you want to ensure that you avoid offending others when sharing your thoughts, think it through before posting. Unfortunately, either we shy away completely from disagreements or we lose it when things don't go our way.
Have a great weekend!
Regards,
Jeff Capell - Principal

Absence For More Than 10 Days
What is an exemption and why do I need it?
Every parent of a child of compulsory school age has a legal obligation to ensure their child is enrolled and attending school. Parents can apply for an exemption from this obligation when their child cannot attend or it would be unreasonable in all the circumstances for their child to attend school for a period of more than 10 consecutive school days.
Situations where an application for an exemption may be made include:
- Illness
- Family reasons
- Cultural or religious reasons
If your child is exempt from compulsory schooling, you are excused from your obligation in relation to compulsory schooling.
The school principal is not responsible for providing an educational program for your child, however they may provide advice on other educational options available. Decisions about exemptions for up to one school year are made by the principal and decisions about exemptions for more than one school year are made by the relevant Regional Director of the Department of Education, Training and Employment, responsible for the supervision of the school your child attends.
Positive Behaviour for Learning
A big congratulations to our weekly PBL snappy winners:

Thanks for being safe, responsible and respectable students!
In Week 1, we looked at being Responsible and the importance of following routines and transitions.
This week we looked at being Safe and making sure we act safely.
Week 3 will see us learning about being Respectful and showing self-respect, courtesy and pride.
In Week 4 we will look at being Responsible and acting as an up-stander.
Learning at Cranbrook
Learning in Prep
Our not-so-little-now Preps have come a long way this year and are nearly ready for Year 1! Our writing is so different now!!
Science was our highlight today - we experimented with bouncing, sliding and rolling objects.
We concluded that the rainbow ball rolled a long way on the carpet. The bouncy ball bounced lots of times on the carpet. The block slides a long way on the hard floor.
A special request from Year 6 to help them with their learning in Term 4........Would there be any families of Vietnamese heritage who would be able to please assist and introduce us to the Vietnamese culture - cooking, games, experiences, traditions etc.? The Year 6 students this term will be studying refugees and in particular, learning from Anh Do's experiences of coming as a refugee to Australia. Please contact our Year 6 Cohort Leader, Nicole Bartels via email (nbart47@eq.edu.au) as soon as possbile, if you can help in any way. Many thanks!
From The Arts
Calling all Prep students....do you love to sing? Well, come along, have some fun and join our Piccolo Chorus this term.
** Monday - 1st break - in the music room **
This is our Senior Choir doing a little 'recruitment' concert for our Preps.
Our Year 3 students have been having a fabulous time learning bucket drumming! Look at them go!
Then they moved over to the Arts where they've been creating 'Stop Motion Animations' using their own animal stories. Stop motion is an animated filmmaking technique in which objects are physically manipulated in small increments between individually photographed frames so that they will appear to exhibit independent motion or change when the series of frames is played back. The students made up their story, painted their backgrounds and created their characters using playdough. Aren't they cute!
The Arts Class of the Week for Week 1 was 1B and for Week 2, 5B were awarded the honour!
Please find attached this term's guitar timetable.

Well done to Cranbrook students Atylda and Harley, who have just returned from representing NQ in Athletics.
Atylda competed in Long Jump, 100m, 200m and 4 x 100m Relay. In Long Jump she won a silver medal, in the 100m and 200m she won the bronze medal and in the 4 x 100m relay she won a gold medal. Atylda has now also been selected in the 10-12 years Queensland School Track and Field team.
Harley narrowly missed out on a top 8 spot in shotput, however, he really enjoyed his experience and can't wait for the challenge next year!
Congratulations to class 3A, who were awarded with the 'HPE Class of the Week' for Week 1.

Spotlight on......
Our Resource Centre!
With the departure of our long term Library ladies, Mrs Shepherd and Mrs Davey, Miss Kelli has stepped in to the role and is thoroughly enjoying her time here on a Friday. You can find Kelli repairing books, organising the shelves, returning and borrowing students' books as their class visits the library, cataloguing new books, running Bookfair, decorating for Bookweek, or just simply greeting students with a smile and a cheery hello, when they drop in during lunch breaks.
Our Library is full of informative, interesting, entertaining, fiction and non-fiction books, to keep any little book-worm busy for hours. It's also a welcome respite for a lot of our students, during the lunch breaks, when they can read or draw or play quiet boardgames.
Thank you Miss Kelli, for bringing a smile and organisation to our much loved Resource Centre.

A little bit of fun and some serious awareness.....
Last term, our staff went a little crazy - with their socks - and raised awareness and funds for the charity 'Love Your Sister'. Here's a few pics of what they got up to. Nice job everyone!
