Cranbrook Newsletter - Term 4 Week 4 2022
Principal's Message
Hello and welcome to our Week 4 newsletter!
Prep Transition
A full suite of resources and information are available on the school website to parents who are looking to enrol their child at Cranbrook State School for 2023.
You are also reminded to keep an eye on the upcoming events section to ensure you don’t miss any opportunities to prepare for 2023.
Prep Transition starts in two weeks on Tuesday 8 November.
Supporting Positive Transitions to Prep
There are many ways a parent or carer can help their child transition from home or kindy to school.
Take a look at the short video from the Department of Education, Perigian Springs State School. This video gives some insights that transition statements provide to ensure that 'learning suits the learner'.
Another short video from the Department is 'Early Childhood and Community Engagement'. This video is another one of several videos on the Early Childhood Education and Care website, designed to assist families, early education and care services and schools to support positive transitions to Prep.
Delayed Entry to Prep for children who have not previously been enrolled in Prep
Parents may delay their child's entry to Prep (and subsequently Year 1) if they feel that the child is not ready to start school. For example, the child is still developing their social and emotional skills. The child can then commence Prep when they are of compulsory school age (6 years and 6 months).
No formal documentation, assessment or approval is required for delayed entry to Prep. Principals do not make decisions on delaying a child's entry to Prep. While some parents may choose to discuss their decision to delay entry with the Principal, it is not necessary for them to do so.
It is strongly recommended that students enrol, complete the transition program and trial Prep for the first 20 days. In some cases, as parents we may underestimate the resilience and adaptive capacity of our children. To be fully informed, let your child have a go, they never cease to amaze us.
Uniform School
It has been wonderful to see all students proudly dressed in their Cranbrook uniforms with every child wearing a Cranbrook school polo.
At this time of year, it is understandable for parents to be cautious about purchasing new uniforms for students who have outgrown theirs and our suggestion is to either purchase the next size up OR contact the school to discuss your options.
Please see the information below in the P&C section, for how to order uniforms.

Term 4 Extra Curricular Activities
During Term 4, Cranbrook State School will again offer a wide range of Extra-Curricular Activities for students to participate in due to the generosity and enthusiasm of the teachers who volunteer their own time. Some parents may have noticed that the Piano and Guitar email offers to participate in these extra curricula activities have already been emailed. The Term 4 Activity Schedule (PDF) is featured here and can also be accessed via the link below.
Please discuss with your child about what opportunities they may wish to be involved in and remind them about their attendance on a weekly basis.
Gradual Release of Responsibility
Our teachers and students are working hard to master the pedagogical approach. You may ask why? Listen to Dr Fisher as he explains a real life example of why this way of teaching works.
In this video, Doug Fisher, coauthor of Better Learning Through Structured Teaching, tells the story of how his experience of buying a smartphone encapsulated the gradual release of responsibility framework.
2023 Enrolment Email
Next week you will receive an email survey regarding your enrolment intentions for 2023. Please advise us ASAP if your child will not be attending Cranbrook during 2023 as we are busily developing new class lists for 2023 that will be released to parents during week 9.
Friday 28th October is a particularly eventful one at our school as students participate in wearing red to support Day for Daniel (No gold coin required).
It is also World Teacher's Day and on behalf of our students and staff, I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to our Cranbrook Teachers in recognition of their dedication and support that they continue to provide to our students so they can all be engaged, successful learners. This year's theme for World Teachers’ Day 2022 is Hats off to teachers this World Teachers’ Day! Make sure you take a look at our Facebook page to see some of our super cool teachers! As per the joint statement from ILO, UNESCO and UNICEF, “On World Teachers’ Day, we are not only celebrating every teacher, we are calling on countries to invest in them and prioritize them in global education recovery efforts so that every learner has access to a qualified and supported teacher. Let’s stand with our teachers!”
Enjoy the weekend - teachers especially!
Regards,

Absence For More Than 10 Days
What is an exemption and why do I need it?
Every parent of a child of compulsory school age has a legal obligation to ensure their child is enrolled and attending school. Parents can apply for an exemption from this obligation when their child cannot attend or it would be unreasonable in all the circumstances for their child to attend school for a period of more than 10 consecutive school days.
Situations where an application for an exemption may be made include:
- Illness
- Family reasons
- Cultural or religious reasons
If your child is exempt from compulsory schooling, you are excused from your obligation in relation to compulsory schooling.
The school principal is not responsible for providing an educational program for your child, however they may provide advice on other educational options available. Decisions about exemptions for up to one school year are made by the principal and decisions about exemptions for more than one school year are made by the relevant Regional Director of the Department of Education, Training and Employment, responsible for the supervision of the school your child attends.
Positive Behaviour for Learning
A big congratulations to our weekly PBL snappy winners:
Week 3 was Malikah.
......and Ryleigh was our Week 4 winner.
Thanks for being safe, responsible and respectable students!
In Week 3, we looked at being Respectful and the importance of showing self-respect, courtesy and pride.
This week we looked at being Responsible and making sure we act as an Up-stander.
Week 5 will see us learning about being Respectful by encouraging and supporting others.
In Week 6 we will look at being Responsible and being determined to improve ourselves.
Learning at Cranbrook
Apologies that the Year 4 link was incorrect in the last newsletter - hopefully, here it is below!
Learning is (still) fun in Year 1!
We have been working super hard this term, learning how to count in twos and how to order money according to its value. We've been practising our reading and really enjoying borrowing books from the library. In HASS we are learning the differences between what is natural, managed and constructed! In Science, we made musical instruments and experimented with their different materials and sounds. For English, we loved reading 'Willy the Wimp' and exploring all the characters.
A special request from Year 6 to help them with their learning in Term 4........Would there be any families of Vietnamese heritage who would be able to please assist and introduce us to the Vietnamese culture - cooking, games, experiences, traditions etc.? The Year 6 students this term will be studying refugees and in particular, learning from Anh Do's experiences of coming as a refugee to Australia. Please contact our Year 6 Cohort Leader, Nicole Bartels via email (nbart47@eq.edu.au) as soon as possbile, if you can help in any way. Many thanks!
From The Arts
It's time to recruit for next year's Instrumental Program!
Learning an instrument at school is a wonderful opportunity - it's low cost and without the extra running around! Learning together with their peers is always fun and there's a wide variety of instruments to enjoy.
Please find further down in our newsletter, a link to the enrolment form that needs to be returned by next Wednesday, 2 November.
5B were fortunate enough to participate in Townsville City Galleries 'Make a Mark' workshop, run by local ceramic artist, Fiona Banner. Students worked to create clay creatures. Real or imagined, the choice was up to them!
5/6D had some fun working on their coordination, teamwork and ability to sing in tune AND move.
Please find attached this term's guitar timetable.
The Arts Class of the Week for Week 3 was P/1D and for Week 4, 5/6D were awarded the honour!
.....and, would you believe, both classes ALSO won the HPE Class of the Week in their respective weeks! Way to go students and teachers!
Sports News
Well done to Cranbrook students Atylda and Harley, who have just returned from representing NQ in Athletics.
Atylda competed in Long Jump, 100m, 200m and 4 x 100m Relay (multiclass). In Long Jump she won a silver medal, in the 100m and 200m she won the bronze medal and in the 4 x 100m relay her team won the gold medal. Atylda has now also been selected in the 10-12 years Queensland School Track and Field team and will travel to Brisbane again - this time to wear maroon!
Harley narrowly missed out on a top 8 spot in shotput - there was only a matter of cms between the competitors, however he really enjoyed his experience and can't wait for the challenge next year!

Spotlight on......
Our Instrumental Music Program!
Woodwind, Brass and Percussion
Through Education Queensland, Cranbrook is able to offer Woodwind, Brass, Percussion and Strings tuition. As a school, we are able to offer, at a reduced fee, Piano and Guitar lessons.
The benefits of learning a musical instrument are diverse and well-documented. There is a growing body of research which indicates that students who learn a musical instrument achieve greater academic outcomes and experience enriched social connections, regardless of their ability on the instrument.
Not only are the academic benefits great, but with amazing teachers and lots of opportunities to perform, it really is worth being a part of this!
Here's what the students themselves have to say about their experience this year:
Claire......It is very fun playing percussion because I get to play the music which helps me relax.
Maddie.....I love learning my instrument (violin) because I get to do it with my friends.
Joel......I like percussion because you get to play lots of different instruments.
Ellie.....I like to play the piano because it helps me to think and relax and I love that I get to learn something new.
Come and join us next year - we'd love to have you!
Please contact Ms Earle via slear0@eq.edu.au or Mrs Onslow via sjohn152@eq.edu.au.
We have a couple of pairs of lost glasses......could they be your child's? (The purple ones have 'Snow White' on the arms) Please claim from the office.
World Teachers' Day
Today Queensland celebrates 'World Teachers' Day'. 'Hats off to our Teachers' this year, acknowledges the amazing time and effort and love our teachers put into our students. Thank you Cranbrook teachers - we appreciate you all very much.
Sports Pride Fridays
Community News
From Phillip Thompson OAM MP
I write to invite your school to participate in a fun activity which could see your students’ artwork take pride of place on my 2022 Christmas card, which will be going out to all constituents in the electorate of Herbert.
Students in years Prep to Year 3 are invited to draw and colour a Christmas-themed artwork to fit the theme Christmas in the Tropics. Designs must be done in landscape orientation.
The worksheet would need to be signed by a parent/guardian before being returned to the school by Friday 11 November 2022. My office will then arrange to pick up the artworks on Monday 14 November 2022. Magnetic and Palm Island schools can submit high-resolution scans. Artwork cannot be considered after this date.
A winner, second and third place will be selected from each year group from Prep to Year 3, with the selected entries to be printed on the official Christmas card. The winning student from each year group will each receive a $50 Toyworld gift card.
Every effort is made to ensure the accuracy of information in this issue of our newsletter at the time of publication.
