Cranbrook Newsletter - Term 4 Week 7 2022
Principal's Message
Hello and welcome to our Week 7 newsletter! Just 3 weeks left of the school year now!
2023 Classes and Teacher Release
Parents and students will receive their class lists for 2023 on Friday 2nd December, Week 9.
As with any release of information some students and parents may be pleased or disappointed with the situation they are placed in.
If you strongly object to either the teacher placement or their peers, you are requested to put your request in writing and outline the EXCEPTIONAL CIRCUMSTANCES that would deem it necessary to move classes.
Please forward your requests to The Principal by Friday, 9th December and mark your correspondence PRIVATE and CONFIDENTIAL. A decision will be made on all requests the week before school begins so new enrolments can be taken into account. No early decisions will be made.
Please be aware that these lists are only DRAFT and the final class lists, teachers and rooms will only be finalised in 2023 after Day 8.
Year 6 Graduation
The Year 6 Graduation will be held on Monday 5th December, 6.30pm at Kirwan High School's Excelsior Centre. A reminder that students with outstanding SRS fees will not be receiving an invitation to the graduation unless other financial arrangements have been made.
Finance Reminder
Due to all receipting closing from 3:00pm on Friday, 3rd December it would be appreciated if all 2022 payments could be made prior to this time.
Money can still be taken after this close-off point, but handwritten receipts will be available only.
All SRS fees are well overdue and parents/caregivers are reminded that payment needs to be finalised (or payment plan arranged with the Business Manager), to enable students to participate in any extra-curriculum activities e.g. swimming, graduation, sport, live performances.

Supporting Positive Transitions to Prep
There are many ways a parent or carer can help their child transition from home or kindy to school.
Take a look at the short video from the Department of Education, 'Early Childhood and Community Engagement - Advice to Parents from Carla'. This video is one of several videos on the Early Childhood Education and Care website, designed to assist families, early education and care services and schools to support positive transitions to Prep.
Clubs
Breakfast Club will cease on Friday 2nd December (Week 9) and will recommence in Week 2 of 2023. A big thank you to everyone who has donated food items and helped throughout the year (including our students). Breakfast Club is a wonderful service for the Cranbrook Community.
Homework Club will cease on Thursday, 17th November (Week 7) and will not be recommencing in 2023. Thank you to Mrs Pringle and the other staff members who have assisted throughout the year.
That's it for this week!

Absence
If a student is absent and the parent/guardian has not notified the school, they will receive an automated text message by 10am that day.
Parents will receive a text message informing them that their child is absent. If you receive one of these text messages, please contact the school to explain the reason for your child’s absence.
A working mobile number should be registered with the school, if available.
Please remember that absence is only marked for the days specified by the parents. If you ring up on a Monday informing that your child is sick and they remain away from school for the following 2 days because they are sick you need to inform us that this was the reason for their absence. Absence For More Than 10 Days
What is an exemption and why do I need it?
Every parent of a child of compulsory school age has a legal obligation to ensure their child is enrolled and attending school. Parents can apply for an exemption from this obligation when their child cannot attend or it would be unreasonable in all the circumstances for their child to attend school for a period of more than 10 consecutive school days.
Situations where an application for an exemption may be made include:
- Illness
- Family reasons
- Cultural or religious reasons
If your child is exempt from compulsory schooling, you are excused from your obligation in relation to compulsory schooling.
The school principal is not responsible for providing an educational program for your child, however they may provide advice on other educational options available. Decisions about exemptions for up to one school year are made by the principal and decisions about exemptions for more than one school year are made by the relevant Regional Director of the Department of Education, Training and Employment, responsible for the supervision of the school your child attends.
Positive Behaviour for Learning
A big congratulations to our weekly PBL snappy winner.......
Jane!
In our PBL lesson this week, we looked at being Respectful and the importance of including everyone. Here's a helpful poster with pointers for having converstions with your children about including everyone and suggestions on how to implement it in your own household and community.
Next week we'll take a look at Responsible and actually
taking responsibility.
Learning at Cranbrook
We've had a busy year in Year 3!
We have been concentrating on perfecting our handwriting this term. Some parents will be very surprised to see just how beautiful our writing looks now!
Solving sentence problems in Maths has been challenging.
Poetry has been our focus for English.
In HASS, we've been learning to identify natural and human features in our environment. Through this, we have learnt heaps more about Queensland and Australia.
Science is always fun - especially doing experiments! We checked out whether ice and chocolate melt in the same way.....
We have become expert 'Scratch' game creators in Digital Technologies.
From The Arts
Thank you to all those families who have submitted their enrolment form for our Instrumental Program for 2023.
There are still some spots available, so please have a chat to Ms Earle/Mrs Onslow and complete the enrolment form as soon as possible, for your best chance of securing a place for your child.

Spotlight on....
Our Sports Excellence Program!
This year the students have participated in many sports and learnt a variety of skills associated with each of those sports. Some of the sports included netball, soccer, basketball, rugby league and touch football. The students are taught these skills by a community coach associated with the chosen sport. During the lessons they are exposed to different drills and games to teach the skills needed to be able to participate in that sport to a high level. The program has also allowed the students to have a visit from our adopt-a-cowboy player in which they played a game of touch football and discussed the important of healthy choices and resilience. Throughout the year Mrs Woods has also worked on their general fitness levels and exposed them to gym-based and agility-based activities. The students have also received a number of compliments throughout the year from the community coaches such as:
* they are a very driven and enthusiastic group
* their behaviour and ability to adapt to a new sport is outstanding
* the best group I have taught all week
* Cranbrook kids have such a positive attitude to their sport
* loved their persistence
Mrs Woods is very proud of their hard work and wonderful manners towards the community coaches that are always happy to come back to Cranbrook.
The process for 2023: For those students interested in being apart of the sports excellence program for 2023 the process is as follows: Trials are held in week 3 and 4 of Term 1. Students will participate in a range of fitness and agility test during the trail days. The student's behaviour and attendance will also be considered in the final decision.
If successful during the trials, then your child will receive a final selection notice. The notice includes an order form for a training shirt and payment details. Students not selected will be placed on a meritorious waiting list and when positions arise, they will be invited to join.
Here's what some of our students had to say as they reflected on this year:
Emily loves the opportunity to get a little taste of lots of different sports.
Harley enjoys mixing with kids he doesn't normally get to mix with and loves the experience of playing sport with these kids.
Jack likes the fact that he's out and about and doing sport and being physical, first thing in the morning.
Juanita has enjoyed learning new skills and putting them into practise.
Cranbrook School Bus Service
We are now accepting applications for our 2023 School Bus Collection Service.
Did you know that we offer a pick up/drop off bus service each morning and afternoon? Thanks to our amazing P&C group, who saw the need for us to assist every one of our Cranbrook families, a bus was purchased (and later another one!) and is now used for excursions, sporting events, arts events and to help our families get our students to and from school.
Applications will be considered on a "first in, best dressed" basis and a two week deposit is required to secure your child's position for 2023. To maintain your position on the bus throughout the year, your account must remain in credit. Parents will be advised if their child's collection service will cease due to a $0.00 credit amount.
Please contact our office if you require any further information.
If you are interested in accessing this service for your child, please complete the form (PDF below) and return to the office.
From our P&C
Thanks so much for supporting your P&C this year. With the funds that have been raised, we have begun two of our priority projects:
- a refurbishment down at our OSHC building
- bubblers installed on the oval
We held our last meeting for 2022 on Wednesday night and we all agreed that we'd LOVE to see some more faces next year. Being a member, or even just coming along to a meeting or two, gives us so much encouragement and it's really valuable for us and for you. We believe that there are 3 C's that go nicely with 'C' for Cranbrook......Communicating - Connecting - Contributing. Come and join us in 2023. The P&C is the place to be!
Please don't forget to consider how you can help us at the Carols Night and the Swimming Carnival.

A couple of other things.....
Chappy and the wellbeing team are collecting donations again this year for Christmas hampers for some of our Cranbrook families. If you would like to give something, there will be a basket located in the staff room where you can leave your donations. Donations will be collected from the staff room on Friday of week 9. Our Cranbrook families are always so grateful for these hampers, so we thank you for your support and generosity in making this happen.
Have your children grown out of their uniforms? Are you looking to spruce them up and get some new uniforms for next year and are wondering what you could do with your old ones? We would really appreciate your unwanted uniforms in order to provide for any of our Cranbrook families who may need a helping hand. We are in need of shorts especially. Please consider if you are able to be generous in this way - the office will gratefully take them off your hands! Thank you.
