Cranbrook Newsletter - Term 4 Week 10 2022
Principal's Message
We made it! The year has flown by and our students are all just that little bit older and a little bit wiser! I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a happy and safe Christmas break. Looking forward to seeing you again on Monday, 23 January 2023.
Report Cards Issued
Semester 2 Report Cards were issued to students on Thursday afternoon and a copy has been emailed to parents.
2023 Classes and Teacher Release
Class Teachers for 2023 have been distributed. Class Lists are unable to be distributed due to privacy requirements placed on us by legislation and parental circumstances.
As with any release of information some students and parents may be pleased or disappointed with the situation they are placed in. If you strongly object to either the teacher placement or the peers, you are requested to put your request in writing and outline the EXCEPTIONAL CIRCUMSTANCES that would deem it necessary to move classes.
Please forward your requests to The Principal by Friday, 10th December and mark your correspondence PRIVATE and CONFIDENTIAL. A decision will be made on all requests the week before school begins so new enrolments can be taken into account. No early decisions will be made.
Please be aware that these lists are only DRAFT and the final class lists, teachers and rooms will only be finalised in 2023 after Day 8.
Student Resource Scheme 2023
Thank you to those parents who have made a decision regarding the Student Resource and Stationery Scheme for 2023.
For those parents who have decided to participate in 2023 by signing the SRSS form and making the payment, congratulations to you, as you have already fulfilled your parental responsibility to provide the required resources for your child’s education. Our school will ensure they have all the required equipment the entire year.
For those parents who have decided to opt out of the scheme AND have returned the Participation Form informing us of that, congratulations to you, as you have taken the first step and you now only need to source the listed resources. Please ensure when you are purchasing the consumable and non-consumable items to clearly mark your child’s name on their belongings as these will be needed every year. For any items that are missing we will contact you on the first day to ensure you can source these before the next day of school so your child can have access to all the resources they require. Your teachers will no doubt be in regular contact throughout the year so you can supply further resources when your child uses the current resources or loses them. If parents don’t supply the consumable items in a timely manner the school will provide your child with the resources and invoice parents the appropriate retail price as listed in our School Resource and Stationery Scheme documentation (details can be found on our website).
For those parents who forget to opt in or out of the School Resource and Stationery Scheme by completing a Participation Form AND/OR have forgotten to pay the SRSS Fees, our office will be open from Monday 16 January for you to complete this. If not, you will be contacted on the first day to make the appropriate arrangements by the end of the day so your child can access the classroom with their peers with the required resources for learning.
Below is a table explaining the discounts. Parents are expected to have paid the fees (part (50%) or full) on the first day of school OR ensure that their child has all the required stationery and resources ready to start school.

Positive Behaviour for Learning
In the very last PBL lesson for this year, we looked at being Responsible and the importance of being resilient and having the ability to cope with unexpected changes and challenges in your life. Here's a helpful poster with pointers for having converstions with your children about being respectful and suggestions on how to implement it in your own household and community.

Snappy Celebrations
Farewell Year 6....
Whilst writing this final goodbye to the fantastic graduating Year 6 class of 2022 I was left feeling
many emotions such as joy, relief and sadness. However, I was mainly left feeling immensely proud. Proud of all the wonderful individual achievements throughout the year, proud of how this special group of students have come together and formed many amazing bonds, and proud of how each member of the cohort has grown and matured over the duration of the year.
In what was a staggered start to the year due to Covid restrictions the Year 6 students hit the ground running in week 3 of Term 1 forming friendships with their peers and teachers. The high
expectations of Year 6 were a learning curve for some however the cohort very quickly rose to
required standard and competently fulfilled our roles as the leaders of the school.
Throughout the duration of the year the cohort participated in many incursions and excursions that supported our learning including: Filming our promotional videos on a trip around Townsville, creating mould in a science lab at Heatley SHS, a visit to the Townsville Disaster Centre and an unforgettable dining experience at a local Vietnamese restaurant.
Year 6 Students actively participated in a range of sporting activities including Red Track, Season 1 & 2 of interschool sport as well as a number of sporting gala days. It wasn’t just on the sporting field that the cohort excelled, they participated in Eisteddfod, the fete as well as organised NAIDOC
activities and hosted and played a starring role in graduation. Camp at Mungalli Falls was a highlight for many students and teachers. On camp students were able to step outside of their comfort zones and thrive whilst completing activities such as abseiling, landslide and tubing through freezing cold water.
It is hard to believe they were able to fit any learning in with everything else going on. However, this cohort was hardworking and always strived to do their best and improve their standard of work. The many good habits developed over the year will stand the Year 6 students in good stead next year. Due to this Cranbrook students are always warmly welcomed by high school teachers.
So now we have reached the last day of primary. Today there were smiles and tears, and definitely
many nerves about moving off to begin a new journey at high school. Enjoy the butterflies, enjoy the nerves and the pressure. Enjoy the process of finding out who you are as a person. Stay focused, keep trying to improve, build, grow and learn. You will meet a lot of great people along your journey who you can laugh with and learn from and enjoy many moments with. So, embrace the goods ones. They can be something to take the weight off your shoulders and support you through the tough times and they’re also people to enjoy moments with and celebrate with. Don’t be afraid to surround yourself with people that you care about, who are also excited to be on this journey with you.
Congratulations and Best Wishes 2022 Year 6 Graduates. You have made Cranbrook State School
proud and we are certain you will achieve many great things throughout the next part of your
schooling journey.

From The Arts
Congratulations to everyone involved in our Carols night! It was a really fabulous night and wasn't Santa just great?!! A huge thank you to performers, artists and parents for their participation and dedication, not only to this event, but every single event we have either put on or participated in, this year.
A well deserved break now everyone, but we are both looking forward to 2023 already.
From Ms Earle and Mrs Onslow.
Sports News
Congratulations from Mrs Woods and Mrs Gordon, to all students who participated in our swimming lessons. Both teachers received positive comments from the swimming teachers, the general public and even staff from another school, on our students' amazing behaviour and manners. Thank you students.
Awarded the other night for their participation in the Disability Dressage competition this year, Lockhart and Anastasia Brown represented Townsville and competed against over 50 participants throughout Queensland. Lockhart was awarded 1st place and Anastasia was awarded 2nd place in Queensland in their division. Well done!
Well, it has been a massive year in the sports department at Cranbrook in 2022. We have had many carnivals in which the kids have represented the school with great pride whilst having a tonne of fun-our athletics team won both the 'C' schools and boys trophy and our swimming team won the 'most improved' trophy at the interschool carnival . We've also had season 1 and 2 block sport for our 5's and 6's in which we saw the Open A Rugby League and Open A Touch teams won a trophy. The older students have also had the opportunity to participate in T20 cricket blast, NQ Touch gala day, NQ netball cup and the U10 Blackhawks challenge-trophy winners were the U10's Blackhawks team and the NQ Touch Gala day team. Our sports excellence students have had the opportunity to enhance their skills in many new sports and learn from community coaches. It has been a huge year full of fun and fantastic dedication from the students - I am very proud of all the students and their effort throughout the year in the different sporting activities that they have participated in. Looking forward to next year ready to do it all again.
Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! From Mrs Woods.

Staff goodbyes
Sadly, the end of the year means that this is the end of some of our staff's time at Cranbrook. All of these staff members have been an integral part of our community and have each contributed their own personality and expertise to their classrooms. Thank you to each of you. We will miss you very much. All the very best for your futures.
Mrs Bec Chant
I don't think anyone can quite believe it, however, after 18 years serving our Cranbrook Community and giving huge amounts of love and time, dedication and sparkly stickers to our Prep families especially, Bec has made the decision that it's time for a new venture.
Bec, we'll miss so much about you, especially your shoes, but our students will miss their passionate, bubbly, shiny, loving teacher.
I have been blessed to have been a classroom teacher and part of the Cranbrook community for 18 years and there are so many things that I will miss when I leave. I have loved each and every moment of teaching the great number of different students that have come through my classroom door and all have found a special place in my heart. When I reflect on my time at Cranbrook, I remember so many wonderful things, but most significant of these would be the opportunity to have both my beautiful girls begin their journey into education at my school with me. This meant I never missed a parade, sports carnival, crazy hair day or any other special school event. It also meant that my children were able to have the most wonderful, caring and dedicated teachers become part of their lives. And it was at Cranbrook that I was first given the opportunity to teach Prep leading me to the realisation that this was where my true passion for teaching lies. Being a part of a child's first steps into education is undeniably special and I am honoured and humbled to have been able to take those first steps with so many little people for the past 15 years.
In 2023 I will be stepping away from the roll of classroom teacher. Instead will be supporting beginning early years teachers and small groups of students requiring intensive curriculum support at Bluewater State School. While this is a new roll for me, I am looking forward to challenge of learning new things, making new friends and helping even more little people along their educational journey to success. I cannot put into words just how much I am going to miss Cranbrook State School. It has been the biggest and most precious part of my teaching life. I will miss all the staff, students and families, many of whom have become not only friends, but more what feels like family, not only to myself but my own children as well.
How do you say goodbye to a place that you have been a part of and loved for so long? Well… for me I can’t. So instead I will just say ‘See you again soon’.
Thank you Cranbrook for all the wonderful memories, opportunities and delightful children I have had the pleasure to work alongside. Have a wonderful Christmas break and stay safe always.
Love Mrs Chant xx
Mrs Samantha Suringa
Amazingly, 16 years have passed by since Sam began teaching with us. Sam's quiet presence, attention to detail, super crafty touches and her very loving and caring soul, has touched many hearts in her time here. Her students get to learn more than the curriculum - they get to learn life and they absolutely love it. Our ANZAC Day commemorations will never be the same again. As I did with all of our departing teachers, I asked them all a few questions and then elaborated on their answers, however, I am just going to put Sam's answers here in full....
I will miss all the students at Cranbrook....even the ones I have not taught. My current Prep class are super special to me, especially now they are my last class here. They are clever, inquisitive, happy, caring, thirsty to learn and oh so very cheeky.....and they say I am the funniest teacher they have ever had, so of course they are my favourites!! I have so many memories from my time here at Cranbrook....most of them happy, some of them sad. While they are far too numerous to list individually, each and every one of them mean so much to me and will stay with me for many more years to come.
Next year I am moving to the Early Childhood Development Unit at Vincent State School and I am very much looking forward to this new and exciting challenge in my teaching career.
Ms Catherine Rowbotham
Our community is really going to miss the fun and laughter that Cat has brought to us over the past 6 years! Cat's love of all things 'arty' has seen her secure a position at the Willows State School next year, teaching dance, drama and visual arts. Fond memories of Cranbrook for Cat, include watching her students grow and progress, the staff gatherings and her Hip Hop club. What Cat will miss most about our school, is the wonderful staff and the innocence of the younger years. Cat, you might think you are going to miss us, but we will miss you.
Thank you Cat and all the very best.
Miss Caroline Humphreys
Caroline has been with us for just over 4 years. We love her and her students do too! It doesn't take very long at all, to build a rapport with Miss Humphreys. She's always up for a bit of fun and her patience in the classroom is 2nd to none! Funnily enough, 'second to none' is also how Caroline describes her Cranbrook community that she will miss. Her fondest memory of Cranbrook is definitely the kids. Kids who she has taught in previous years, still come to her room every afternoon and say hello. Other fond memories would definitely include annoying the Cranbrook Staff as much as possible! As Cranbrook was Caroline's very first teaching placement, she is now feeling confident and keen to explore other teaching positions and so next year she is off to Kirwan Primary. What a lucky lot they are!
Thanks Caroline and all the very best!
Miss Jo Hills
In her short 3 terms with us, Jo did a great job quickly establishing a rapport with her little crew. Putting her creativity into her lessons, especially Science, the students didn't take long to love her. Apparently they are going to miss her parkour demonstrations..... Our students will definitely miss their caring and kind hearted teacher.
Thank you for being with us Jo and all the very best.
Mrs Tianah Sorensen
Having only had 6 months with us here at Cranbrook, we haven't been able to get to know Tianah very well, but what we have seen, is her beautiful, quiet self love her students with compassion and immense patience. Tianah will miss the friendliness of our staff, students and families and see the growth of her students in just one semester. Tianah, we think this is a reflection of your dedication! The very lucky Palm Island community will welcome Tianah and her family next year.
Thank you Tianah and all the very best.
Cranbrook School Bus Service
We are now accepting applications for our 2023 School Bus Collection Service.
Did you know that we offer a pick up/drop off bus service each morning and afternoon? Thanks to our amazing P&C group, who saw the need for us to assist every one of our Cranbrook families, a bus was purchased (and later another one!) and is now used for excursions, sporting events, arts events and to help our families get our students to and from school.
Applications will be considered on a "first in, best dressed" basis and a two week deposit is required to secure your child's position for 2023. To maintain your position on the bus throughout the year, your account must remain in credit. Parents will be advised if their child's collection service will cease due to a $0.00 credit amount.
Please contact our office if you require any further information.
If you are interested in accessing this service for your child, please complete the form (PDF below) and return to the office.
A couple of other things.....
Have your children grown out of their uniforms? Are you looking to spruce them up and get some new uniforms for next year and are wondering what you could do with your old ones? We would really appreciate your unwanted uniforms in order to provide for any of our Cranbrook families who may need a helping hand. We are in need of shorts especially. Please consider if you are able to be generous in this way - the office will gratefully take them off your hands! Thank you.
