Principal's Message
Well, here we are - the end of Term 2. It's been a wonderful, busy and exciting term for us all.
Staffing Updates
Class Restructures - Over Semester 1 we have continued to receive many new enrolments and due to these increased enrolments, our Year 2 and 3 classes are oversized and as a result we need to do a class structure for Semester 2. The details are as follows:
- The year 2/3D class will be collapsed and an additional straight Year 2 (2C) and Year 3 (3C) class will be formed.
- 3C will be taken by Morgan Snell and will be required to move classrooms.
- 2C will be taken by Amanda Flor for the first 3 weeks and then by Kate Dowzall for the remainder of the term. This class will be placed in 2/3Ds old classroom.
- The Year 1/2D class will be restructured to a P-3E class with Mr Henry being assigned to this class. This class will remain in Mr Henry’s current classroom.
If these changes impact your child, you would have received an email as well as your child receiving a paper note. Students were informed of the changes that will impact them on Tuesday, when the notes were handed out. Parents are invited to discuss any concerns with Mr Capell.
Extended Leave - Miss Donna Bell (4C) will be on leave for Term 3 and is being replaced by Mr Chris Mayo.
Departures - Ms Jacqueline Howlett has spent the last 6 weeks as an LRT at our school and been fortunate enough to secure a Kindy contract for the remainder of 2023, and her passion is certainly in the Early Years. I would like to thank Ms Jacqueline Howlett for the time she has spent at Cranbrook.
Chappy Danielle is finishing up at the end of term after an amazing couple years supporting our students and in some cases staff too. She has made a real difference to so many students' lives and is the mainstay of the schools Student Wellbeing Team. We are working hard to secure a new Chaplain as quickly as we can.
Mrs Amanda Allender has been successful in gaining a promotion to Western Cape College as Primary Associate Principal. She will commence this role at the beginning of Semester 2. Her contribution to our school over the past four years has been immense for which we are grateful.
The Deputy Principal position selection process has begun and we will advise our school community when the position is filled. For the first three weeks of Term 3, Mrs Shannon Morgan will be Acting Deputy Principal.
Quadrennial School Review
Our school is currently engaged in its Quadrennial School Review and developing a new Strategic Plan to better accommodate the needs of our students and staff.
Quadrennial School Review Traffic Light Survey – Parents
Thank you to those parents who helped us to make our 'great' school an even 'better' one by completing the Traffic Light Survey that was emailed to them.
The results will be published during Term 3 via a dedicated email. After the school Leadership Team has reviewed the input, a second series of emails will be published with the school's responses.
Annual School Report
Each year, all schools in Queensland publish a report on their school's progress and achievements for the previous year. The report is a version of our review and reflection which is completed at the end of each academic year (which is the same for all schools).
School annual reports are a key governance and communication mechanism for schools and their communities to help express and celebrate the focus, activities and outcomes of schooling each year. Our 2022 school annual report is available to view on our school website.
(You may also like to take a look at our Annual Improvement Plan and our Strategic Plan found under 'Documents' on our website.)
Breakfast Club
Our school Breakfast Club is very popular every morning. A big shout out and thanks to those parents who regularly donate items so that the children have an opportunity to have a healthy start before their learning each day. This initiative is only possible with the support from our major supporter, Food Relief North Queensland, various charities, church groups and our wonderful Cranbrook parents.
Extra Curricula Activities
It is expected that some extra curricula activities will begin in Week 2 Term 3 and that a program of activites will be forwarded to students in week 1 of Term 3.
Lunches
A reminder that students are not allowed to bring metal cutlery to school. Please send along disposable or reuseable plastic options.
Athletics Carnival
Congratulations to COORADILLA on their win today! Well done to Mrs Woods for organising a considerable and complex event and thank you to our staff for your support. Well done to the P&C for organising food and drinks and for allowing parents use the OHSC facility toilets. We wait with anticipation to hear who our Age Champion winners are early next term!
Reporting
Report Cards will be distributed on Friday, 21st July and no parent teacher interviews will be offered as part of this process. However you are reminded that you can request a meeting with your child’s teacher any day about any concern that you have. The teachers' email addresses are also included in the report cards and via the link below, for you to contact them electronically if this is preferred.
Year 5 & 6 students: Please note that the students' Japanese results will be emailed directly from Cairns School of Distant Education to parents early in Term 3.
Keep a watch on our school these holidays
Please help to take care of our school by reporting any suspicious after-hours activity to School Watch on 13 17 88. By keeping an eye out we can work together to create a safer school community and help to reduce vandalism, theft and arson in our school.
If you see something suspicious, please don't intervene. Call the School Watch number and let the local police or State Government Protective Security Service deal with the matter.
I wish you all a safe mid-year break and look forward to seeing you all next term.
Term 3 commences Monday 10th July.

Cranbrook is a UNIFORM SCHOOL
As we enjoy some cooler weather, the Cranbrook P&C have reinforced that Cranbrook State School is a UNIFORM school. This includes the winter uniform of jumpers and jackets and if purchased now will maximise the use and provide value for money.
The Cranbrook P&C were very conscious as to not ask the school to enforce the winter uniform policy when the jacket was only available due to the higher cost. However, they have now had the economical fleece jumper option available for two years and as such, have now moved to have these requirements enforced.
Over the next fortnight:
- Students will receive paper notes to take home to parents reminding them of the school’s uniform expectation.
- Parents will receive emails notifying them of the Cranbrook Sate School’s winter uniform policy.
- Parents will be contacted by phone by their Year Level Principal (Amanda Allender – Prep, Yr 2, Yr 4 & Yr 6 & JeffCapell – Yr 1, Yr 3 & Yr 5) to discuss the uniform expectations.
Thank you to those parents who have been able to ensure their child represents the school with pride by wearing the school’s Winter Uniform Policy.
The Uniform Shop is open each morning from 8-9am and payment may be made by cash or card. Alternatively, you can order via the P&C’s Big Commerce website and the purchase will be delivered to your child's classroom.
The school jacket is $45. The school jumper is $30.
The website is: https://cranbrook-state-school-pc-association.mybigcommerce.com/
Cranbrook jumpers/jackets
Cranbrook jumpers and jackets are a part of our compulsory uniform. Not only are they necessary for the cooler weather, they are also handy to have in the airconditioned classrooms - no matter what time of the year. Our P&C have worked hard to be able to offer you two lovely, good quality and practical options.
The jacket is light, windproof and spray proof, has two zipped hand pockets and is lined with soft knit material, making it ideal for wearing at any time. The cost is $45.
The fleece pullover also has two zipped hand pockets and a zip near the neck, allowing the child to protect their neck in the cold but gives the option of having some extra air if it's getting a bit warm. This is our more economical option at $30.
A big well done to our Winter Uniform Snappy Winner for Week 9, Ruby.
Thanks for being responsible and respectful Cranbrook learners and having the appropriate winter uniform!
Each day across the colder months and until the end of Term 3, students with their Cranbrook jumper/jacket are awarded a snap. Snaps are collated and one winner is drawn out every week on parade. The recipient receives a $5 voucher to spend at the Tuckshop.
Thank you to all the families who support us in ensuring their children are responsible and respectful Cranbrook Learners.
Positive Behaviour for Learning
A big congratulations to our week 10 PBL snappy winner:
Lillith!
Thanks for being a safe, responsible and respectable student, Lillith.
In Week 9, our PBL lesson was about being respectful. Our statement was 'I respect others' privacy and property'. In Week 10, we focused on being responsible and how to be resilient.
Here are the flyers with some handy hints to chat about at home.
Next term, we will revisit our 10 PBL lessons again.
Yesterday we had our PBL Celebrations for those students who have been safe-responsible-respectful and had no major behaviour incidents for the term. Well done to those students - the majority of our students, who were able to participate and who had a heap of fun.
Cranbrook Learning
Year 4 and their very interesting YUMI Maths task!
On Wednesday afternoon our Year 6 students showcased what they've been learning this term, with their 'Queenslander' Culminating Event.
The students had to calculate how much food and drink they would require, prepare it and then serve their guests.
All the activities were centred around what they've been learning......and there was heaps of fun all round.
Bush poetry was one of the key features of the event and Liam's Grandpa inspired us all with his compilation and presentation of his own piece of poetry. Here it is:

Something to make you smile
We were all so excited to hear that Year 5 student, Makayla, has reached the end of her cancer treatment and had the privilege of being able to ring the bell at the Townsville University Hospital last week.
Below is the post (and the photo is too) from the hospital's Facebook page.
We send our love to all Makayla's family.
Goodbyes
When people make an impact in your life, it is really difficult to say goodbye and that is certainly the case as we say goodbye to Chappy Danielle and Deputy Principal, Amanda Allender.
They have each written a little something to leave us with.....
Unfortunately for personal reasons, I am having to say goodbye to Cranbrook SS this term. I have been extremely fortunate to be your Chappy for almost 2 years and I have really enjoyed getting to know and be part of this wonderful school community, a strong community that really care and help each other in times of need. I am so grateful for the opportunity to journey alongside students and provide support and guidance through the ups and downs of life.
I will really miss seeing everyone’s smiling faces every day, hearing about all the fun things that you get up to and playing games of handball and uno. I will also miss and have really appreciated the kindness and support from our wonderful staff and families. Thank you all for your encouragement during my time here.
While I will no longer be in my chaplaincy role, I will still be involved in and attending the Chappy fundraising dinner in term 3. The school has been a big supporter of chaplaincy and I want to honour that, as I am very thankful. So, I hope to see you there on the 29th of July.
I hope you all have a wonderful, well deserved school break.
Best wishes,
Chappy Danielle.
As I prepare to move onto my new school at the end of the term, I want to communicate my thanks to the Cranbrook community for welcoming me into their classrooms and children’s educational journey over the past few years. I feel proud that I have been able to work with so many fantastic teachers and see the amazing improvements in student outcomes. What I will miss most about Cranbrook is the beautiful student smiles and the supportive small school feel. I am leaving knowing that the school will continue to be led by an excellent principal and teachers who put 110% effort into supporting the educational growth of each individual student at our school. I wish all of the students the best on their continued endeavours.
“Don’t give up!, I believe in you all! A person’s a person, no matter how small” Dr Suess.
