Cranbrook Newsletter - 2023 Term 3 Week 2
Principal's Message
Welcome back everyone to our next forty days of learning in Term Three.
I would like to take this opportunity to extend a very warm Cranbrook welcome to our new families who are joining us this Term.
It is always wonderful to see all newcomers settle in so quickly and adapt to our daily routines and culture. Term Three is always one of the busiest in every school year. There will no doubt be other activities and events along the way to keep us even busier. If you are not yet following us via Social Media, I encourage you to like our school Facebook page as another way to keep abreast of our news.
Quadrennial School Review
We continue to publish the responses we received from our parents, from the Traffic Light Survey. The responses from our school will be published soon afterwards.
Extra Curricular Activities
Term 3's Extra-curricular activities have begun and once again we thank our teachers for dedicating their time and our parents for their encouragement.
Reporting
Report Cards have been distributed to students today, as well as emailed home to families. No parent teacher interviews will be offered as part of this process. However you are reminded that you can request a meeting with your child’s teacher any day about any concern that you have. Cranbrook staff email addresses are available via the link below, for you to contact us electronically if this is preferred.
Please ensure your email addresses are up to date with our office staff to ensure you receive your digital copy.
Year 5 & 6 students: Please note that the students' Japanese results will be emailed directly from Cairns School of Distant Education to parents early in Term 3.
Procedures for Ensuring Safety
Parents and carers, a reminder to please ensure that:
- you sign your children in through the office if they are late to school,
- you sign them out if you need to collect them early (including from sick bay), and
- you sign them in and out if they are out of school for a period of time during the day.
You will be issued with an Early Departure/Exit Slip from our system when you report to the office to collect your child. Teachers will be instructed not to release children who have not presented with the Early Departure/Exit Slip. This is very important to track where children are, and also for our official record keeping.
Daily Absence Notification
Queensland state schools are required to advise parents/carers when their child is absent without explanation as soon as practicable on that day, allowing time for parents/carers to respond before the end of the school day. Are you receiving your text message when your child is absent? If not, please contact the school to update your contact information.
Parents can reply text the reason for their child's absence and then you won't need to write a note or call our Absence Hotline.

2023 Challenge Games
The purpose of The Challenge Games is to provide two days of fun, friendship and participation in a range of sports and activities for school students who have a disability. Students may participate in as many or few events as they wish, according to their own level of interest and ability. Whilst the aspect of fun and participation will remain the focus of the Games, it will also allow for the identification of students who may be interested in competing at further levels in formal Track and Field events.
Our school is only attending this event for one day - WEDNESDAY 26th July from 8:30 am to 1:30pm and the cost is $10.
There are LIMITED NUMBERS for students with a diagnosed disability to attend. (Speech Language Impairment, ASD, Intellectual Disability, Vision Impairment, Physical Impairment and Hearing Impairment meet the criteria)
Please review the attached link for further details: https://thechallengegames.com.au/ and/or contact KAYE BUCHAN – HOSES on 47261222.
If you would like your child to attend, please keep a look out for an email with the electronic permission slip attached, that will be sent out Monday morning. This will be the one and only chance to provide permission and it will be a 'first come -first served' system until our numbers are allocated.
The school bus will transport students, SEP Teachers and SEP Teacher Aides to and from the event. We will leave at 8:15am from the staff carpark.
PARENT REGISTRATION - If you would like to attend the event with your child please complete the Parent Registration using the online link: https://thechallengegames.com.au/register/parent-registration/ Parent registration and transport is independant of Cranbrook State School.
Every Day Counts - Attendance
Regular, punctual attendance at school is expected of all students. Students should be present at school ready to prepare for the day's learning by 8:30am.
Late Arrivals
Students arriving after 8:50am must report to the office to receive a lateslip. If a student is late, a letter of explanation from the student's parent/guardian must be presented to the office staff on arrival.
Absence
If a student is absent and the parent/guardian has not notified the school, they will receive an automated text message by 10am that day.
Parents will receive a text message informing them that their child is absent. If you receive one of these text messages, please contact the school to explain the reason for your child’s absence.
A working mobile number should be registered with the school, if available.
Please remember that absence is only marked for the days specified by the parents. If you ring up on a Monday informing that your child is sick and they remain away from school for the following 2 days because they are sick you need to inform us that this was the reason for their absence. You can inform us after the absence via a message directly to the teacher or by contacting our absence hotline or email.
If your child is absent, please leave a message detailing:
- Child's name
- Class
- Reason for absence
- Dates or duration of absence
Absence Hotline - 4726 1260
Absence Email - absences@cranbrookss.eq.edu.au
Absence For More Than 10 Days
What is an exemption and why do I need it?
Every parent of a child of compulsory school age has a legal obligation to ensure their child is enrolled and attending school. Parents can apply for an exemption from this obligation when their child cannot attend or it would be unreasonable in all the circumstances for their child to attend school for a period of more than 10 consecutive school days.
Situations where an application for an exemption may be made include:
- Illness
- Family reasons
- Cultural or religious reasons
If your child is exempt from compulsory schooling, you are excused from your obligation in relation to compulsory schooling.
The school principal is not responsible for providing an educational program for your child, however they may provide advice on other educational options available. Decisions about exemptions for up to one school year are made by the principal and decisions about exemptions for more than one school year are made by the relevant Regional Director of the Department of Education, Training and Employment, responsible for the supervision of the school your child attends.
Cranbrook is a UNIFORM SCHOOL
As we enjoy some cooler weather, the Cranbrook P&C have reinforced that Cranbrook State School is a UNIFORM school.
Thank you to those parents who have been able to ensure their child represents the school with pride by wearing the school’s Winter Uniform Policy.
We will continue to send a note home to remind parents of our uniform requirements, should your child be wearing a non-Cranbrook jumper. Students who have a Cranbrook jacket or jumper will receive a snap and go in the draw to win some Cranbrook cash!
Please feel free to contact your child's Year Level Principal (Shannon Morgan – Prep, Yr 2, Yr 4 & Yr 6 & Jeff Capell – Yr 1, Yr 3 & Yr 5) if you wish to discuss the uniform expectations.
The Uniform Shop is open each morning from 8-9am and payment may be made by cash or card. Alternatively, you can order via the P&C’s Big Commerce website and the purchase will be delivered to your child's classroom.
The school jacket is $45. The school jumper is $30.
The website is: https://cranbrook-state-school-pc-association.mybigcommerce.com/
A big thanks to our Winter Uniform Snappy Winner for Week 1, Emily and for Week 2, Ava.
Thanks for being responsible and respectful Cranbrook learners and having the appropriate winter uniform!
Each day across the colder months and until the end of Term 3, students with their Cranbrook jumper/jacket are awarded a snap. Snaps are collated and one winner is drawn out every week on parade. The recipient receives a $5 voucher to spend at the Tuckshop.
Thank you to all the families who support us in ensuring their children are responsible and respectful Cranbrook Learners.
Congratulations to Week 1's winner, Emily and Week 2's winner, Ava.
Positive Behaviour for Learning
It was a double draw for our Week 1 PBL snappy winner.
Congratulations to Braxton and Amity-Rose.
Our Week 2 winner was Eevee.
Thanks for being a safe, responsible and respectable students.
We began the term in Week 1, with our PBL lesson about responsibility. Our statement was 'I follow routines and transitions'. In Week 2, we have focused on being safe and how to act safely.
Here are the flyers with some handy hints with what and how to chat about this at home.
In Week 3, we will look at being respectful, with the statement I Show Self-respect, Courtesy and Pride'. In Week 4, we will look at being responsible, with the statement I Act as an Upstander.
Cranbrook Learning
It's a beautiful time of the year for Year 5 students to take their learning outside the classroom and practise their fractions.
......and for the Year 1s to learn some fire safety.
From The Arts
Oh what a night! Did you come to our Cranbrook Creates Concert last week? If not, you did miss out on witnessing some amazing talent, from our little Ukulele strummers, to our booming band - from our cute choralists and their furry friends, to our funny-as drama acts.....it was a night of smiles and applause! A big thank you to all the teachers involved and to our Cranbrook Alumni who attend the night.
Thanks for supporting the TAIKO Performance this week. From all accounts, the students really enjoyed it (and right across the school, we all did too!).
Sadly, we weren't able to make this a school excursion, however, we wanted you to know about this very funny, very worthwhile show that is on at the Civic Theatre. Go if you can!
Our musical will be performed this term!
Please read the costume note and the rehearsal schedule carefully and let us know of any concerns you may have.
Please keep encouraging your child to practise. A musical is not just about the lead parts.....EVERYONE is a vital part (and they are getting assessed too!).
Thank you everyone!
In our Visual Arts Excellence sessions, our students have been creating Reg Mombassa inspired cities, using air dry clay! Very exciting!

There are not too many more weeks for you to complete the Premier's Reading Challenge!
The Premiers Reading Challenge is not a competition, but a way to encourage students to develop a love of reading for life. Students are encouraged to select a range of fiction and non-fiction books suited to their reading ability and record books read during the reading period, 8 May - 25 August.

To acknowledge students' great efforts in completing the challenge, a certificate signed by the Premier, will be awarded.
Forms to record the books read have been sent home to all Prep and Year 1 students. Interested students in other grades are encouraged to get a form from their teacher to participate.
